I feel so uncomfortable with Christian 'pop' music. e.g. fast paced, 'Bon Jovi' esque Anthems ('Blessed be the name of the Lord' for example) that provokes fist clenching hysteria!

The rhythm is inconducive to prayer and seems a way of 'forcing' an encounter with the Holy. I haven't a problem with people listening to Christian pop music but it is often imposed on people during religious services.

Why do many groups that define themselves by their orthodoxy, loyalty to Rome etc. also have a liking for this kind of music? What's wrong with the Church's traditional sound? Is it legitimate to play this kind of music anyway at Mass? I feel embarrassed to ask my non-Christian friends to come to a Mass if I know it will be dominated by this kind of music.

Sorry if I have offended anyone

A lot of those songs are very sappy. I can see how they help some people spiritually, but I don't think the proper place for them is Mass. We're not there for entertainment, but for worship, and they aren't usually reverent.

It is important to have good music at Mass, as it is a way of glorifying God, but it should also be respectful as Christ is present there in the tabernacle.

I think Benedict has written some stuff on this as Cardinal Ratzinger, can some one help out with quotes???

I'm not a fan, to say the least. Using this kind of music during religious services is a Protestant invention -- at best silly, at worst disrespectful.

I listen to this kind of music (although, distinctly Catholic themed) once in a while, but it is absolutely inappropriate for Mass.

I was wondering why the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal appear so fond of this music even though generally speaking they seem to be so proud of their orthodoxy.

I like the music, and I don't consider it unorthodox. JP2 was known to be fond of this music, too. It's okay not to like it, but it's ok to like it, too.

For me, it brings out a joy and a feeling of happiness that helps me experience Christ differently than typical music. I could live without it (in Mass especially), but in general, I like it.

I really don't care if you have a problem with this kind of music, I'm not entirely fond of the emotionalism, but to claim that those who do like this music must be un-orthodox is arrogant.

I completely agree, one of the best masses I ever went to was Fr. Stan Fortuna (aka "The Rapping Priest") . It was also one of the most reverant masses. The kids all knew how to respect the mass and still enjoy it at the same time.

Have you ever listened to Fr. Stan Fortuna's cds? He with the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal and goes around the world giving concerts. He's amazing. However, he doesn't play his songs, a lot of which he wrote himself, including some rap, during Mass. He has written some beautiful songs. Check out his website sometime. I have four of his cds and listen to them all the time. I've met him several times and he is a very gifted priest.

I don't think Leao acually said that.

had he said "They seem to be orthodox" maybe, but instead he said "seem to be so proud of their orthodoxy" what other conclusion can one come to than he doesn't believe one can be orthodox and like praise music. I wonder what some Catholics would do if they saw Solomon dancing in praise of the Lord.

^ I think that was David who danced...

What's the point?

How about simply praising the Lord and offering our voices in praise?

Is that not enough?

“And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod.”
– 2 Samuel 6:14

“Let them praise his name in the dance: let them sing praises unto him with the timbrel and harp.”
– Psalm 149:3

“Praise him with the timbrel and dance: praise him with stringed instruments and organs.”
– Psalm 150:4
