Hey all,

I finally surveyed the den of mold that my apartment has become. We had 5 1/2 feet in the front to 4 1/2 in the back. The carpet has soaked up enough water to have ridges and valleys. The kitchen and living room looked like a war zone. One roomie's Alamo poster survived.... apropos, don't you think?

Before the storm, I threw a bunch of stuff up on a shelf about 5 1/2 feet high. That got some mold, but no water: My San Damiano crucifix is missing. My Tau crucifix (tau cross + corpus, obviously) is ok, though. My books got a little mold, but no water. If I air them out, they should be ok. PS2, dvd's, old laptop, router and cable modem are ok. Chess set from Poland is ok. Hanging clothes looked salvageable, surprisingly. Other clothes, not as good. Chair, mattress, desk are toast. Stereo is toast too. Shoes are goners. TV is dead. Computer is being typed upon now. Car got me away from the storm.

The abandoned furniture that we had now has to be replaced....

The apartment itself: needs new carpet, new cabinets, new fridge, new washer/dryer, new dishwasher, new sheetrock, new floors and probably new ceilings. It basically needs to be gutted and rebuilt. If my landlady's contractors are finished w/ it by January, I might go back.

I'll post pics once I get them developed, digitized and uploaded.

I'm just fortunate that I have family to fall back upon. I still have my job and don't have to scramble for housing to keep the job. If you're looking for something to do, call the Tulane call center.... j/k, we have too many calls for me to handle chit-chat. It looks like my normal job function will return around Nov 1.

Here goes....

First, the front entrance to the house. My dad and I opened it up for a little ventilation.

Here's what I saw in the den:

This is one of my friend's stuff. He had been staying w/ us as he finished his master's thesis.

Then, I went around to the back door and went into the kitchen:

Then, I finally went into my room:

And looked at my closet:

I've got a few other pictures, but I figured this would get the point across. It's certainly been a wild ride so far. I'm wondering what God has in store for me next. Tulane has transferred me back to doing IT work, though still in Houston. I'm just glad that God's put people in my life so that this storm was not truly devastating to me. It just ruined my apartment. I'm typing this on my computer, at my uncle's house in Houston, with my parents' house to go back to in Louisiana. I still have my car (named Grace!) that has served me well in hurricane avoidance (evacuation 3x: Ivan, Katrina and Rita) and commuting. It's been a "noble steed" indeed.

Thanks for your prayers!

Wow! Those are amazing pictures, thanks for sharing.

The outside looks so pretty... but inside. :pinch: Ick. I feel a sneeze coming on just looking.

Really, really glad you were safely out of there!

What kind of $$ did you get from the government or Red Cross? Where is our money going?

did you spend it on $800 handbags?

I would spend it on shoes.

I feel like I'm going to have an allergic reaction just from looking at it. Praise God that all you lost were a few belonging. I still pray for all the victims, and I'm glad that you are doing all right.

God bless-

Well, I replaced my monitor and TV w/ a monitor that has vga, dvi, component, composite and s-video inputs. I replaced my stereo w/ a cheaper one that is better. I also bought some clothes. When (if) I return to my apartment, I'll replace my furniture and my mattress.

I wouldn't buy a handbag.

I don't want to spend money on anything except food, gas and bills for a while...

BTW, we had to go in there w/ rubber gloves and masks b/c of the mold. It's good that we can't transmit the smell of it over the internet....

It's amazing that the whole fridge was toppled over and the swivel chair at your desk stayed in its place! That chair must be at least 900 pounds! Wow.

Blessed be God! You have my prayers.

peace be with you,

-Joe

Actually, I had put it back there... It hadn't fallen over, but it wasn't under the desk when I had found it.

My friend who lived in Metairie went back to her apartment, and it hadn't flooded, but there was mold in the building. She threw out most of her furniture and her guitars had warped, but she deemed that her mattress and clothes were fine. She got back up to Baltimore, and when they unpacked the stuff, she realized that eveyrthing she had smelled like "death." She washed her clothes many, many times, and tried to air out the mattress, but she ended up throwing pretty much everything away because she couldn't get rid of the smell.
