cathgrl83 Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 I needed to vent about this because it's been bothering me since it happened. The accident happened on Thursday, and it was "technically" my fault . Meaning she hit my car but she had the right of way. I was pulling out of a parking lot, a very small one at that, and there were cars parked along the street so you couldn't see coming out of there. I thought I saw the last car turn onto that street and drive past me, but apparently I didn't, so we hit. My car's totalled, her's needs some work, but it's not nearly as bad as hers was. Anyway, everyone was nice about it, I asked her boyfriend repeatedley if she was okay, and she said she was fine. So after all of that and calling AAA and everything, I thought it was over and done with. Well apparently not, she called back 2 days later and told them she was injured. I was in Sacramento and my mom called me and I was completley stressed about that, because she said NOTHING about being hurt. So I had to call them back today. I just hope I don't have to do anything else after this. I want all of this to be over. Does anyone else have any stories to tell???
zabbazooey Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 I've hit some parked cars in my day. I totally hit 2 parked cars in the past 3 days. I need to have my license revoked. Prayers for your situation, cathgrl83!!
Lil Red Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 some people just want money. some people truly are injured, but some people just want money. my husband rear-ended a woman, because it was very icy out, it was a minor accident, barely any denting, etc., and she claimed days later, that she was injured, majorly. it was ridiculous. i rear-ended a woman, because i wasn't paying attention, barely hit her car (less than 5 miles an hour), she said she was fine, then when the cops came she said she was hurt. also very ridiculous. some people just want the insurance money. i will be praying for this situation for you!
Lil Red Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 also to say: in my experience, insurance companies do minimal investigation into these accidents. they will just pay out for "injuries"
Cow of Shame Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 (edited) did you call the cops? 'cause if she didn't report the injury to the officer, he can back you up. Hopefully you've got a good insurance company that will work with you. Keep in mind that it is THEIR job to investigate this. Edited October 3, 2005 by Cow of Shame

There are many huge law firms that do nothing but insurance defense.
Brother Adam Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 I nearly got into a horrid accident a couple of days ago. I was driving down the lane in the Wal-mart parking lot about 10 MPH when a women came speeding (25 MPH or so) through the lanes in between parked cars. She pulled right in front of me and I had to slam on the brakes. Our cars couldn't have been more than a couple of inches apart when she stopped. I honked, she gave me a dirty (but frightened) look and kept driving. NDLfB!!! No Drivers Lisences for Blondes!!!
Sojourner Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 [quote name='philothea' date='Oct 3 2005, 05:06 PM']Oh, it depends on the size of the claim. We didn't have any issues with the insurance company; I rear-ended someone, but there were extenuating circumstances so I only had responsibility for the damage to my car, not to the car I hit. It's funny ... I very, very rarely have nightmares. But when I do, they're almost always about car crashes. Oh, and on the being hurt thing ... sometimes injuries legitimately do surface a couple of days after a crash. After mine, I had some significant bruising from my seatbelt, and my ankle was a little sprained from slamming on the brake so hard, but the whiplash didn't start up until a day or two later. It's not uncommon that injuries to the neck and back take a little time to make themselves known.
philothea Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 And some stories. My husband was driving (I was a passenger) and we were sitting at the right turn lane at a red light, stopped, when all of a sudden WHAM, the minivan behind hit us. I said something unladylike. My husband, whose head had been turned all the way to one side was bleeding where his glasses hit the head bolster, and his glasses were all bent. But we were essentially fine. We got out and talked to the guy who hit us. He said he'd assumed we were going to zoom through the small gap in traffic, so he went too... Err, okay. Neither car seemed to be damaged. His license plate was imprinted (in reverse) in the dust on our bumper. We called the police in to report the accident just in case, but really, everything seemed okay. However, the other guy kept giving us his insurance information, and trying to convince us to call them! He was an immigrant, and I don't think he realized that it's not a great idea to report minor things to your insurance company. We kept telling him not to do this, that everything was all right. I think he was excited that he was going to get something for his money. The glasses bent back okay. Our bumper had not lost its goo. We did not call his insurance company. Another story: A friend of mine got into a very minor accident; she tapped, very lightly, the rear end of the car in front of her, a BMW. A lawyer who had just passed his bar exam got out of the car and started ranting. He was going to sue her. He was going to rake her over the coals. She'd never get away with it... etc. etc. So, she listened for a while, and tried to reason with the young man. Eventually, she said, "You'll have to talk to my husband about it," and handed the guy her husband's business card. Her husband is a federal judge. No complaint was ever made.
crusader1234 Posted October 3, 2005 Posted October 3, 2005 Here in Manitoba we have Public Insurance. This is really nice, because it means rates are very low and to make a claim you need some pretty savage evidence.

Perhaps, um, living someplace where driving is not necessary might be a consideration? (Sympathies. I hate cars. Well, no -- I like cars. I hate people driving them around in proximity of other people.)
Phazzan Posted October 4, 2005 Posted October 4, 2005 Usually what they do is, they act all nice and calm about it, get you to admit liability for the accident, and then the "injuries" suddenly start popping up. Lesson: never admit liability.

homeschoolmom Posted October 4, 2005 Posted October 4, 2005 Six months before our wedding, I was in a near fatal car accident. Stupid blizzard. Anyway, it was bad. I survived, my car did not.
