When you go to confession...

and the priest tells you your penance,

what happens if you don't do all your penance and you still recieve the Eucherist?

you really should do the penance prescribed but if there is no enough time etc then that's OK. The forgiveness of sins requires absolution not the penance. The penance is like making up by some other "work" the "injury" caused by the sin. It is part of the atonement for sin.
