Benedicite Posted October 5, 2005 Posted October 5, 2005 Hey guys I figured ya'll are more vocal on here than on onerock (any onerockers around, don't bust me! ) I've got this massive research assignment due next week , on Fashion Photography vs. the Perception of Self... and I wanted to do a section on Modesty. Apart from books and theories written by psychoanalysists and all them smart peeps, I'm looking for opinions of normal peeps, and how they see the whole deal. So I'd be muchly if you could add your thoughts on 1) What does Modesty mean to you? How do you respond to it? 2) How do you respond to the Media's attitude towards modesty (or pretty much the lack thereof) 3) (guys) I've heard once that if girls could see what goes through a guy's head, they wouldn't even think about dressing like they are. Any thoughts on that or how you see the whole girls+modesty thing? Do you even think about it? 4) How do you identify yourself? (the whole question of identity again) Please add your thoughts on any/all of the above! And any extras you can think of Your opinion would be published!
curtins Posted October 5, 2005 Posted October 5, 2005 1. In a fashion sense- dressing in a respectful way that is not out to showcase any anatomical features so to speak. but rather respect the dignity and sexuallity of th person. 2. I say the media should leave. now. 3. I would be a big proponent of the idea that girls do not understand what a guy's head is ages lets say 13-at least 20 or so. Its specially hard for a guy thats trying to avoid lust. 4. how do I identify myself? what do you mean?
Benedicite Posted October 5, 2005 Author Posted October 5, 2005 Yay! a reply!! Thanks Good question.... what do I mean hehe~ Um... like how do you perceive who you are? Are you shaped by external factors (eg. media, friends etc.)? To what extent? Hope that was clearer!

Modesty means to me, "I love myself for who I am and I don't have to appeal to you or anyone else to be a person with human dignity worthy of respect." 2. The media is completely misguided in their view of modesty. I hope that they will learn to respect themselves enough to stop selling out. 3. This is very, very true. I can't stress enough how important modesty with girls is. 4. What do you mean?
curtins Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 everyone is shaped by external factors one way or another
Paladin D Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 Everyone should wear be fully clothed in either stormtrooper, clonetrooper, scout trooper, snow trooper, and sandtrooper armor. Although, based on the first part of that sentence, it looks like 'normal' could be code for 'kinda stupid.' If that's the case, you'll probably get a good baseline for your study. heh Good luck. I hope you're polling a more secular slice of the population as well. Edited October 6, 2005 by Cow of Shame
tojo Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 1. Modesty is dressing and presenting oneself in a way that is respectful and considerate towards God, oneself, and other people. 2. The Media seems to have little sense of modesty whatsoever, as a great many people on TV dress and present themself as objects and playthings. 3. It is very important for guys that girls take care to be modest. Feminine immodesty creates near occasions of sin, and it's hard to avoid females all together. Especially take care of how you dress at Mass. I prefer to concentrate on Jesus rather than concentrate on not looking at the panties of the girl sitting in front of me that are peeking out from between the top of her pants and the bottom of her shirt. 4. This question is unclear and difficult to answer.
zabbazooey Posted October 6, 2005 Posted October 6, 2005 1) Modesty means dressing appropriately to respect God and our fellow humans 2) I think it's disgusting. I buy what I feel comfortable in, don't care if it is fashionable. I gotta go or else I'd answer the other two
jmjtina Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 (edited) The beauty in modesty means letting everyone see the real you without the distractions or total focus being on the physical body. I respond really negatively. I get frustrated and I want to rip up those darn posters of nekkid ppl advertising underwear who look like they eat one cruton a month........but I rspond constructively in public, writing letters to departments and the local paper..... How do I identify myself? With my drivers liscense? : Edited October 7, 2005 by jmjtina
Maria Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 Strangely enough, I've decided to discuss modesty in my catechism class. So first we're looking at the body's relationship to God, and then the implications of that. Then I define modesty as a way of presenting the body (dressing and acting) that draws attention away from the body, to the person, and ultimately to God. Like Mary, the first walking tabernacle, we must always magnify the Lord, not our body or whatever. Here's what I suspect the poster I'll make in class with the children will look like. Then, after that, we'll discuss concrete ways to dress and act modestly. The media is out to sell sex and society has no idea of the true dignity and beauty of the body, because they don't know God's plan and how it relates to the body.

Benedicite Posted October 7, 2005 Author Posted October 7, 2005 yay! I've managed to keep my computer off alllll day *proud* Which explains the delay in posting
i get agrivated at how some young ladies and teens dress in church
Ditto aye.. I've only been noticing it recently.... and consciously trying to dress nicely for Mass... it was pretty hard to start with aye took an extra 20 mins to find the right clothes lol~ But it's getting easier now Maria: ooh ooh!! you take a Catechism class? Ok, got questions for you, but will stick it in another thread before I get too sidetracked hehe
I hope you're polling a more secular slice of the population as well.
Weeeell... I thought about it, but I'm not involved in any secular boards.... So if I don't get around to asking all my atheist friends, I'll just put that it was a recent survey done on fanatical phatmassers oh yeah.... for all who are confused, question 4 is just a general question of identity. Let me rephrase it... 4. What are the major influences on your personal identity?
Snarf Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 1) I've become so desensitized by the media that modesty means very little to me. Except, if someone consistently dresses modestly, then I may judge her according to her own standards of morality. I had a high school friend that was a very devout Apostolic, and so she wore nothing but long-hemmed dresses and skirts. However, I once saw her walk into a tanning salon across from the coffee shop wherein I worked, and so I wondered how that could apply to a lifestyle of modesty. 2) I think it's just a sign of the times. The media wouldn't sell sex if there were no market for it. People have always been lecherous, but now it's acceptable to be open about it. Therein lies the difference. In ten years people will watch re-runs of our shows and think the garb is prudish. So it goes. 3) As a guy, I don't want to know what goes through my own head. 4) My basic attitude is that nobody is going to remember me once I'm dead (and the sooner the better), so I may as well leave an impression now. I dress eccentrically, I have a number of eccentric habits, et cetera. But I'd rather not that people think of me as the guy with no fashion sense, but as the guy with the crazy theory of coeternal souls. So, any attention I garner for myself I can hope to apply to that. I don't care about living on in memory in this world, but I honestly hope that my ideas (and hopefully someday) actions make a difference. I've always had a penchant for errantry, so at all costs I avoid being defined in terms of my peers. Last week a girl asked me "what are you all dressed up for?", and I should have said "you". I wear bowties and ascots not to show off, but to prove that the status quo is not all that matters. I think it's a better approach than when I used to wear RATM &c. shirts.
shelly_freak Posted October 7, 2005 Posted October 7, 2005 So why do people dress imodestly? Attention from the opposite sex. Why do they want this attention? At the heart it has to do with marriage/sex. Well sex and marriage go hand in hand so people dress imodest to find a life long partner. Do you really want to spend your life with someone cause your imodesty got them to notice you? Not me. Therefor, wear clothes. Yes, it has it's holes but I still think it's a pretty good theory!
Maria Posted October 10, 2005 Posted October 10, 2005
what grade maria?
This year I've got gr 4, but I've had the 'class' (plus or minus some children) for gr 1 and 3 as well. I had a really hard time trying to think of something I could appropriately use as 'your body/the human body'.
Maria Posted October 10, 2005 Posted October 10, 2005
Maria: ooh ooh!! you take a Catechism class? Ok, got questions for you, but will stick it in another thread before I get too sidetracked hehe
Yes, I've taught catechises for, well, I'll be starting my 4th year. When the Quebec government removed confessional school boards (or the exsistence of confesional schools? I can't think), our diocese went into faith education, and the program is called proposing Jesus Christ today. Or something like that. I can only remember it in French right now. And it's not just focussed on children education. And the thing our Cardinal wanted WYD follow-up to be especially focussed on happened to be faith education. Um, whatever questions you want to ask me, you should let me know about them because threads disappear so quickly and I don't come here every day.
