If you need to have this class in order to graduate, and it is unlikely that another prof will teach it later on, I'd say your best bet is to go in and talk with him. Not once, not twice, but at least three or four times during the semester.

Seriously. You might go in to talk with him about your grade, and ask for more information on what he is looking for . . . but then also go in with questions about that week's reading, or ask for clarification on something he said, or bring him an article that pertains to the class topic or on one of his pet projects (and that you have read beforehand).

I'm not just telling you to kiss up (although that is part of the plan) but to create a relationship with him. Showing initiative might help things, even if you don't end up being best buddies. At any rate, I doubt it can hurt, and it might help.

yeah, I've never been a good butt kisser, and have lost jobs because of it, but I've always been a better person for it, and at other jobs, good jobs, have been respected and held as a person with integrity because of it.

I guess I don't believe it is too much to ask for a decent, fair, teaching in return for nearly $2,000.

No, it's not too much to ask for quality teaching in return for nearly $2,000--but, at this stage in life you have to be your own best advocate. Sometimes that means taking a different path and sometimes that means trying to make the most of the situation you are in. I think the big question is, are you learning anything from him about the your class topic?

Again, not denying an element of sucking up, but just affirming that you may have something to learn from him--and in order to figure out what that is you may have to take the initiative to establish a relationship with him that is not entirely based upon a grade.

And on a personal note, when there is someone I just cannot stand, I find the thing I have to do first is pray for them--not that they will be nice to me, or that things will go my way, but I pray 1) for whatever in their lives is in need of God's loving grace and 2) for myself, that I will be able to see and love Christ in them. That's why I recommend talking with him and getting to know him as a person. Maybe he'll let you do that, and maybe not. But at least you will know that you acted with Christian charity and integrity in your dealings with him.

Come on guys, this man laid down SOME SERIOUS MONEY. Why should he put up with him? Offering it up is different from sucking up.

The quality of our meat is better because of awareness.
We have lemon laws. Our food is protected. Our education should be.

This "Professor" is dangerous..

Yeah, that's another problem. No one understands him. And we are not a group of people who sluff off in classes. Because we are used to tough profs, we are used to working at times to understand them. He is incomprehensible most of the time. So are we learning anything? Hardly. The texts are usually inappropriate as well.

I just had another thought. Yup, two whole thoughts in a day, I must be on a roll.

Why should this situation be any different than anything else in our lives?

Why should "Brother Adam" accept sloppy "customer service?"
That is what it boils down to? He is paying money for a service. AND THE SERVICE smells of elderberries. Why accept it in a college when you know you would not accept it anywhere else?

The reason "Professors" like this exist is because enough people aren't complaining. How do I say this? He isn't "above the law." So what, he is a PROFESSOR and how is this supposed to impress me? Because he is "an educator" I hold him to a higher standard.

Why smell of elderberries up or kiss up (I don't have the lips for it) to someone who if it were not for you wouldn't have a job? You are paying for his car, his house etc.

I don't know guys I was raised in Philadelphia. And "making nice with idiots" is not something I was taught to do.

Yeah, I liked Hildebrand though (he was awesome). But he is a pretty tough grader... and I only had him for a 101 class, and a lot of people in that class complained and I never understood.
