Before the revision of the monsignori by Paul VI with the motu proprio Pontificalis domus, a Rt. Rev. was the way one addressed the higher forms of the monsignori.

Traditionally, the papal Chamberlains were called Very Reverend and the higher were called Rt. Reverend.

In some countries, suffragan bishops are called "Right Reverend," while the archbishops are called "Most Reverend."
