Belloc once observed that "We sit by and watch the Barbarian, we tolerate him; in the long stretches of peace we are not afraid. We are tickled by his irreverence, his comic inversion of our old certitudes and our fixed creeds refreshes us; we laugh. But as we laugh, we are watched by large and awful faces from beyond: and on these faces there is no smile."

It's philosophy...I've always thought philosophers were either brilliant or stoners...and since I haven't a clue what Belloc was talking about, I considered it a drug-induced statement from you...of course, I wasn't being serious.

yeah, I don't like philosophers. but that quote seems to be talking about putting up with those who are irreverent or make fun of the faith.

drugs are for losers. I drink.

Philosophers search for the deeper meanings, sometimes they get lost, sometimes they see clearer than the rest of us.

Is that non-smiling face the face of the barbarian? Who after having infiltrated our defenses through our smiling tolerance intends to destroy us and all we stand for?

not knowing the context, that is a scary reading of the excerpt.

Lay off the booze, it is every bit a drug as my tobacco (just because the pot is black doesn't mean it can't warn the kettle), and for those who don't have a natural tolerance, every bit as addictive and damaging as the controlled substances

There is nothing at all wrong with drinking in moderation. Studies have consistantly shown that a drink or two a day has positive health benefits.

The same cannot be said of tobacco, marijuana, or any "hard drugs."

this is sure scary. does the awful faces belong to third party players who are silently eyeing the happy and joyful first players before they make their move on them?

it sounds like something Stephen King would write.

The quote speaks of condescension. As we laugh at those who make fun of beliefs we secretly hold dear, always a stern face reminds us not to give in to the crowd, the "barbarian," and to not laugh when something is not funny. Imagine if someone made a dig about Catholicism in your precense. You laugh because all the non-Catholics around you are laughing too. However, you suddenly see your priest. He has a face with "no smile." Imagine how terrible, to you in that moment, that "large and awful" face would be. I don't know about yall, but I'd be feelin' pretty low. So I think its talking about keeping tabs on ourselves, so others don't have to do it for us.

I have to admit when I read the title I thought

"This" is a very nifty little pronoun.

Actually, marijuana is quite useful for cancer patients.
