theculturewarrior Posted October 19, 2005 Posted October 19, 2005 Would it be feasible for a Catholic to put the Jesus Prayer "on a par" with the Rosary. (I used quotation marks because I hate to think of competing prayers). Would it be feasible for a Catholic to pray the Jesus Prayer more often than the Rosary?
Laudate_Dominum Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 In terms of privileges and promises associated with a devotion, it is hard to compete with the Rosary. However, that is not really the issue. The Church does not legislate personal devotion in this manner. There are many schools and traditions of spirituality within the Church. I would be weary of discounting the Rosary entirely, but there is no rule which states that the Rosary ought to be the extent or even majority of one's private devotional life. If a person has more of a eastern Catholic spirituality I suppose they would favour the Jesus Prayer, and this would be a good thing. If a person finds that by praying the Jesus prayer throughout the day they acquire fruits in their spiritual life then by all means have at it. Given the number of encyclicals that recommend the Rosary, and the Marian message of modern times via approved apparitions, I'd say excluding the Rosary entirely would be inadvisable. But certainly praying something else with greater frequency is not a problem at all. I met a Benedictine Monk some time ago who carried nothing on his person other than a Rosary and a Chotki. I actually thought this was quite awesome and should like to imitate that man. God bless you.
