Craftygrl06 Posted October 19, 2005 Posted October 19, 2005 Is anyone here on myspace? It's like Facebook but with everyone, not just college students. Anyway, I was on their forum today in the religion section and i can across a post calledWhat Religion Are You? And most everyone was answering either Atheist, agnostic, or CELTIC?? What's worse is, most of them say they USED to be "christain" or "Catholic" or "jewish." I became increasingly worried that this sort of thinking ("well maybe there's a God, but I don't have the time to research this sort of thing") was become WAY too normal among young adults...very scarey. I'm sorry this post is disjointed but i'm kind of freaked out.
toledo_jesus Posted October 19, 2005 Posted October 19, 2005 don't freak out me dear. There are plenty of people who know what's up, as evidenced by this site. we're just scattered around...
Thy Geekdom Come Posted October 19, 2005 Posted October 19, 2005 I read somewhere that some 10% of Italy is now involved in Satanism...scary world we live in.
OldFashionedGirl Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 I'm a part of myspace - or I was, but I'm not allowed on anymore because I get spyware from it. But I did notice that there were like NO real Catholics on there...and all the cruddy picturas that poped up at you...*shudders* I sent the myspace staff a message about their ads, but they completely ignored me.

OldFashionedGirl Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 I think it might be what they call "new-age".

I really think the opposite prevails, people believe in a God because they are taught to but they don't ever question the idea. More often than not I think these people (Myspacers u mentioned) have looked deep into religion and see the folklore that it is. As far as the rise in numbers. I think people are growing increasingly disillusioned with religion and/or religious establishments. Especially young people.
jezic Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 i'd say it differently. Young people seem to be desparate to grab on to something that is solid. Religion provides that. You hear of more and more people joining things like Campus Crusade and FOCUS. (the most stable would be the only one that has been there since the beginning. )

Nathan Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 A lot of self-proclaimed Wiccans out there these days. Mostly gothy teenaged girls who've read maybe half a book on the subject.

It is my experience that this is exactly the opposite. Most youth have either been brainwashed by Mtv or hurt so badly that believing in anything makes them angry and they do not have the tools to deal with this anger. It is my experience, particularly with the youth of Irving Texas that they love authentic Freedom and only misunderstand the Church. If you look up the info from Gallop, the numbers point to an increase in religious fervor among the youth.

I do volunteer work for young teens here in Tampa and from my experience, most of the students I encounter are slightly religious to absolutely agnostic, atheistic. While the ones that do believe in God, only believe in it on very basic level and do not adhere to any teachings of the bible or any established church. Some hold no interest in the subject whatsoever. I'm not sure how MTV and such brainwashes kids away from religion. Last time I watched it, it was filled with nothing but cheesey teen reality shows like Laguna Beach. I'm not entirely sure how that leads to brainwash. You see the rise of the religious, I see the rise of the secular. We agree to disagree.
photosynthesis Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 In my environment, I see a growing secularism. My family started out Catholic... Both sets of my grandparents were orthodox Catholics, they both had 7 children. My dad and all of his brothers and sisters were raised Catholic and went to Catholic schools. Today, NONE of them are Catholic. My mom and all of her brothers and sisters were raised Catholic, and only one aunt of mine is Catholic. Even my grandma is buying into secular ideas. As far as my generation goes, I am the only young orthodox Catholic in my family, and my upbringing was not orthodox at all. Youth culture is growing more secular. The youth are growing up with divorced families, abuse, abandonment, and no sense of true morality. But inside all of us there is a longing for order, for morality, and for the Truth. We're tired of divorce, we're tired of sexual licentiousness, we're tired of individualism and secularism. As far as my experience goes, I grew up in a parish that lacked orthodoxy AND basic christian charity. We need a renewal in both of these areas.

Socrates Posted October 21, 2005 Posted October 21, 2005 If people's experience of religion is only a watered-down, weak, mushy, "feel-good" version of the Faith, people will lose interest in Christian religion all together. If one's "religion" is barely distinguishable from atheism in its tenents, why not go all the way? A watered down, minimal religion is worthless, and where such is preached, kids will either lose interest or reject it altogether. Where there is solid, orthodox, Catholicism, the Faith will grow, among young and old alike. I've seen this first hand.
