Guest :: EattheFlesh :: Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 How far does the obligation to go to Mass on Sunday extend? Are we obliged to refrain from travelling to or living in areas where Mass is not available? And to what lengths are we obliged to go to get to Mass? A two-hour drive? An all-day journey? This isn't just a theoretical question. I'm planning to live at some point on an island where there is no priest and the nearest communion service is a $40 boat ride away, which can't be undertaken on Sunday itself (the people there take the Sabbath very seriously).
Pio Nono Posted October 20, 2005 Posted October 20, 2005 JMJ 10/20 - Twenty-ninth Thursday EattheFlesh, A good general rule to follow is, whatever distance someone is willing to drive to go to a sports event on Sunday, that should be the distance they're willing to travel to go to Mass on Sunday as well. Your situation, though, sounds quite different. It would seem that your Sunday obligation to attend Mass wouldn't be binding, but you should spend an hour on Sundays in prayer in its place. Hope this helps. Yours, Pio Nono
