Laudate_Dominum Posted October 23, 2005 Posted October 23, 2005 Novus ordo, or more properly novus ordo missae, means new order (or ordinary) of the Mass and refers to the Roman Rite Liturgy as it was revised after the Second Vatican Council. This Mass is called "new" (novus) to distinguish it from the pre-1970 Roman Rite Liturgy which is commonly called the Tridentine Mass because it was promulgated after the Council of Trent in the 16th century. Perhaps one of the major differences between the two liturgies is that the Tridentine Mass was celebrated in Latin, whereas with the novus ordo the practice of celebrating the liturgy in the vernacular was established in the Roman Rite. The novus ordo was based upon the prior rite and a surface examination of the text of the two rites will reveal the clear similarity.
