Lounge Daddy Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005
An accidental discovery announced this week has taken LED lighting to a new level, suggesting it could soon offer a cheaper, longer-lasting alternative to the traditional light bulb. The miniature breakthrough adds to a growing trend that is likely to eventually make Thomas Edison's bright invention obsolete. When you shine a light ... or apply electricity to them, they react by producing their own light, normally a bright, vibrant color. But when Bowers shined a laser on his batch of dots, something unexpected happened. "I was surprised when a white glow covered the table," Bowers said. "The quantum dots were supposed to emit blue light, but instead they were giving off a beautiful white glow."
ARTICLE the end of light bulbs and the beginning of tabletops that glow bright enough to light a room?
Guest T-Bone Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 Wouldn't that make eating somewhat unpleasant?
Laudate_Dominum Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 the link isn't working for some reason.

haha, I guess so. But it would be cool to have a ceiling that emits white light, and possible walls that glow with a gentle white light. I wish they had panels you could put anywhere that lit up, and you could control the brightness somehow. And it wouldn't have to be as bright as a lightbulb so that it burns your eye to look at it directly. It would just glow brightly and pleasantly. I'm down with that. And you could make them so that they last basically forever. I actually want to design a room that is lit with glowing ceiling panels instead of conventional lights just to see what its like.

Cow of Shame Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 I'm just wondering when we're all going to have to wear silver jumpsuits & wide belts....
toledo_jesus Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 If I can get off the planet before I die at 550 years old, then science will have served me well.
Thy Geekdom Come Posted October 25, 2005 Posted October 25, 2005 That's awesome. I wonder what happens when they discover they can illuminate the dots according to electronic codes...paper-thin computer screens...
