No drugs, no drinking, no smoking, no sex...its big in the Hardcore scene...yay know...tough guys screaming into a microphone with flailing guitars in background.

Also has something to do with progressive (liberal) politics...but for the sake of everyone else here:

no sex, no drugs, no drinking, or smoking.

I was in High School. That was more than 6 years ago. I kinda grew out of it.ß

I always thought straight edge was represented by XXX - has that changed? I had friends who were straight edge in high school.

sXe stands for Straightedge. It's a movement that came about in the 80's when the band Minor Threat was relatively popular. Their motto was, "don't drink, don't smoke, don't {insert F word here}. The movement was embraced by teenagers who were embraced by the licentious use of drugs, alcohol and the casual sex that was accepted by so many punks.

The straightedge lifestyle is characterized by abstinence from drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and "casual sex." Don't be fooled. sXe isn't about chastity, a lot of people I know who are into it see the straightedge way of abstinence as "waiting until you're in love." It's not chastity. <_<

I know few straightedgers who aren't vegan or vegetarian, and I think this is due to the popularity of the band Earth Crisis, who were into the sXe lifestyle along with environmental and animal rights activism. Now, it's usually expected that if you become straightedge, you have to be a tree and animal-hugging vegetarian. A lot of them are also into tattoos and body piercing, probably because people in the hardcore/punk scene are more disposed to be into that stuff... Tattooing is a symbol of lifelong commitment to the lifestyle. One of the most popular straightedge tattoos is the "X." In the 80's, underage people at punk shows got X's marked on their fists if the venue served alcohol. People over the legal drinking age started marking X's on their fists (and other body parts) to show that they were choosing not to drink.

The movement is unique because it is a counter-counterculture, going against the punk rock lifestyle, which is supposed to go against mainstream middle-class values.

I was never straightedge, and I especially couldn't be straightedge now because I love wine too much :D:

I did a thesis on it in my pop culture class... when you are a communications/media studies major this is the kind of stuff you learn about in class... I am a bad bad comm major because i hate television.

did i just write all that? I think I did.

has anyone heard about the straight-edge Mormons? There were many episodes in Salt Lake City of straightedge gangs assaulting people who were smoking and drinking in public. I guess since Mormons already are against drinking, drugs, smoking and promiscuity, they had to find some other way to be countercultural <_<

i guess i do the things that straight edge people do but i dont label myself that... its no promiscuis sex (they still say they can have sex with girlfriends) no drugs no drinking no smoking and some take it to extremes like no caffeine and stuff

I thought the sXe was kind of interesting, but I never understood why they choose or practice what they do. Why exactly do they think "non promiscuous" sex is ok? What is their definition of promiscuous? I can see how smoking is bad, and the samething for excessive drinking.

Whats with all the veganism and such?

In conclusion, I feel sorry for those who get the huge black X's tattooed on their hands when they discover how good a nice glass of wine is. :wine:

I've also heard reports of sXe kids beating up people at shows that drink or smoke. I have no idea if its true or just rumors. It seems that the violence would contradict their beliefs, especially nonviolence towards animals (veganism).

well, people who smoke and drink are just not as adorable and CUTE as little kittens and manatees and stuff. Seriously, the stuff you've heard about violence is probably true.

I think their definition of "non-promiscuous" sex is waiting until you're "in love" or "in a committed relationship." Why do they think it's OK? Perhaps no one's told them the truth about the virtue of chastity.
