Wipe Israel from map, says Iran’s president

Mr Ahmadi-Nejad’s comments came as Islamic Jihad, a militant Palestinian group allied to Iran, killed at least five Israelis with a bombing in the Israeli town of Hedera. Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility, saying it was avenging Israel’s killing of a West Bank commander on Monday.

US analysts noted that the president’s remarks were not a departure from hardline Iranian rhetoric and did not represent new policy.

But they said the rhetoric was aggressive and badly timed, and would serve to confirm western suspicions of Iran’s more confrontational approach that were raised by the new president’s speeches at the United Nations last month. [/quote][/font]

I say, let's end this charade of Jewish sovereignty and go marching in there with troops under a papal banner. Then we can deal with the Iranians under the coverage of Christendom. Let them bomb or attack us, we'll burn the Dome of the Rock to the ground. Let them move their troops anywhere near Israel, we'll destroy every mosque/religious center/holy site in the southern half of Iran.

I don't see how your statement is relevant to the story. The Iranian government does not speak for Islam. Their take on religion is just that; theirs. It does not make Islam, as a religion, peaceful or unpeaceful, anymore than the IRA makes Catholicism a terrorist organization. To judge a religion, you have to look to those who speak for it. There is no such person as far as I know in Islam. Which makes it a religion subject to diversity of thought.

Era to my mind as a British Catholic the IRA were more socialist than Catholic though they recruited soldiers from Catholic area they're aims were more in line with those of their buddy Colonel Gadaffi.

Ok. Fair enough. But my larger point is about the way we evaluate a religion. It would not be fair, say, for Protestants to evaluate Catholicism based on Frances Kissling and "Catholics for a Free Choice". The group does not speak for Catholicism. I think we should extend the same courtesy to Islam, and all religions. The Iranian government could be said to typify the Muslim world, as a temporal order, just as Frances Kissling may represent a lot of American Catholics; but they do not speak for the Catholic or Islamic faiths qua religions.
