God's Errand Girl Posted November 5, 2005 Posted November 5, 2005 (edited)
I've been seeing the same thing as well. The USCCB rated it L ("Limited"). I don't think I'm gonna see it. Looks like trash. The trailer was dope though.
I agree with you about the trailer. I loved the background music, "Jesus Walks" by none other than Kanye West. The combination of the music and visual was rockin' my socks. Edited November 5, 2005 by God's Errand Girl
Sojourner Posted November 6, 2005 Posted November 6, 2005 I saw this movie this afternoon with a friend. We came away from it with mixed feelings on it. There isn't tons of action, and it's anticlimactic and more than a little nihilistic. The acting is good; some of the cinematography is quite beautiful. There is sexual content and language ... but, as was mentioned earlier, it is a movie about the Corps. Despite the rawness of some of the content, I think the overall message of the movie is a little more subtle. It's definitely given me material to ruminate on for a while.
beatty07 Posted November 6, 2005 Posted November 6, 2005 Lt. Beatty's official review: Knowing that the book is very nihilistic and generally messed up, I went to this movie expecting it to annoy me severely. I was pleasantly surprised...I'm actually a fan. The movie is not completely without political swipes, but they aren't bad, and there's considerable balance. It's definitely not political propaganda. What I love about the movie is that it's about Marines. I'm Air Force, which is a decidedly different culture, but there are more similarities than differences. These are real flesh and blood military people with real military problems. And for those who say there's not much war in it, that's exactly wrong. That's how war is for lots of people lots of the time. Anyway I hope people who see this movie will have a better understanding of what these men and women go through, how deeply they are affected. It also shows how the more immoral aspects of grunt life are related to stress and defense mechanisms...something I think people need to understand. For those concerned about the content, you are right to be! There is a lot of sin in this movie. However, it is never glorified or celebrated. Neither is it exaggerated from reality. There is one very graphic adulterous scene, but it's shown as a horrific and hurtful thing, no glitz. It may even help some people understand the horror of adultery. That being said, this is not a film for people without well-formed morals. Most of all it made me itch to get ordained, pin on a Chaplain's cross, and get over there to help.

I would have to add that it did a VERY GOOD JOB of opening my eyes to a lot of what goes on in the minds of our young men serving in the Middle East... It was...VERY eye-opening...
GODisLikeWhoa Posted November 6, 2005 Posted November 6, 2005 I saw it on friday when it came out and I had read some mixed reviews on it. A lot of people were all depressed because there wasn't really any fighting in it. Yes, there is a LOT of cursing and sexual content. A LOT. However, I absolutely loved the acting and it really opened my eyes to the reality of war. It gave me a lot to think about and I definetely see things differently, It puts you in the mind of a Marine, during and after the war. We really need to be praying for those men and women out there because it looks really tough and leaves you really changed. It is something that I think you should personally make a judgement call but overall I thought it was a great message for such a time as this.
God's Errand Girl Posted November 6, 2005 Posted November 6, 2005 My parents went to see the movie last night. They weren't big fans. One of their comments was that the camaraderie between the Marines made them look like misfits. I haven't seen the movie but was curious if anyone who had would agree or disagree with their observation?
beatty07 Posted November 6, 2005 Posted November 6, 2005 I think that's part of the point...it's the flip side of the same coin as "the brotherhood of war" - which now inludes sisters too. The experience changes you in a way that no one else really gets...except the ones who went through it with you. That's why veterans will always hang out with each other. It's a very different culture, and it's a mixed bag. On the one hand, you have all the immorality that Jarhead depicted...maybe not usually that strong. On the other hand, military people as a whole tend to be more focused on family, honor, character, duty, and sacrifice for others. Everything is extreme...including virtues and vices.
zealousrap Posted November 7, 2005 Posted November 7, 2005 (edited) I heard it bashes the US and has a dude masturbating to a picture of his girlfriend. I don't know about anyone else, but that kind of makes me not want to see the rest of it. It's like dog c-r-a-p in a brownie mix. I don't eat em even with the slightest bit of c-r-a-p in em hahaha Edited November 7, 2005 by zealousrap

I hate the fact that sex can be shown on tv, so this wasn't my kind of movie. There was a lot of bad language, but some of the movie was comical and it had good scenes in it, but if you are looking for a good moral movie, this is not it. Don't let your kids watch this. ~Darvon
Ang3l Posted November 8, 2005 Posted November 8, 2005 Does anyone have an idea as to whether or not the script was written by a marine or has any first hand researched document ed facts behind this? Or was it just some guy using what he saw in the news or second hand info with some carefully placed editing?

The script was not written by anyone in the armed forces, although the director consulted with various Marines. The Marine Corps as a whole has not endorsed this movie.
