Brother Adam Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 We have to write a 6 page research paper on a 'topic of our choice' in Catholic Social teaching that includes at least 3 writings from JPII, at least 2 writings non JPII, at least 1 writing from the USCCB, at least one writing from a current theologian from a scholarly source to compare and contrast with the Churches current teaching (it gets more complicated). I'm not sure what I should write on. I can't write on any socio-economic topics since that is what the class has been about. I'm not sure what JPII wrote a lot on. It could be something like race relations, capital punishment, war and peace.... ideas?
Era Might Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 Depends what they mean by "Social Teaching". John Paul II wrote a lot about women's place in society.
StColette Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 Pope John Paul II wrote a lot on women's roles would that work?
Sojourner Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 I was going to suggest the same thing, lol ...
Era Might Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 Another possibility: Liberation theology. Although it is somewhat socio-economic, it is more deeply theological.
Brother Adam Posted November 2, 2005 Author Posted November 2, 2005 Thanks for the suggestions. What writings talk about women's roles, and what writings talk about Liberation theology?
Era Might Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 (edited) For women: "Mulieris Dignitatem", and other documents scattered about (eg, Redemptoris Mater). He also has a chapter on women in "Crossing th Threshold of Hope". Of course, his TOTB Wednesday Audiences. Not sure about Liberation Theology. Don't think he addressed it with an entire document. Might take some research. "The Ratzinger Report" has an excellent treatment of Liberation Theology by Pope Benedict. Edited November 2, 2005 by Era Might
Sojourner Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 Here's an interesting article which addresses John Paul II's views on women.
Sojourner Posted November 2, 2005 Posted November 2, 2005 Race relations could also be interesting -- I just read an abstract for a study which found that it's easier for a white person with a criminal record to get a job than it is for a black person with a clean record to get a similar job. I'm hoping to get a full copy of the study, so if you're interested in that I can send you the link when I get it.

theculturewarrior Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 For your scholarly resource, you could use one I found in an Italian journal for phatcatholic! (It's got to be good for something! : )
