Aloysius Posted November 3, 2005 Posted November 3, 2005 The Indult grants the use for the 1962 missal, correct? Well, I have a 1962 Missal with little Red Numbers by all the responses, 1, 2, and 3. These numbers indicate which responses should actually be said by all the laity rather than just the servers. I believe it was part of the reforms of Pope Pius XII, level 1, 2, and 3 participation masses. Level 1 was basically the way it has been for five centuries, only responses of laity include like "et cum spiritu tuo" but not much else. But Level 3 participation is basically a full scale dialogue mass, even the laity join the priest in the paternoster. So my question is, if the Indult grants permission for the missal of 1962, does this then include Level 3 participation (dialogue) Tridentine Mass? Does the priest or parish with the indult have the option between levels 1, 2, and 3? Do you know of any indult mass that uses level 3 participation mass (every one I've ever been to is only level 1)?

It is, in fact, called the dialogue Mass. It was prior to 1962, however. It was prescribed by the Congregation of Rites in 1958. The Instruction was called De Musica Sacra. It states:
A final method of participation, and the most perfect form, is for the congregation to make the liturgical responses to the prayers of the priest, thus holding a sort of dialogue with him, and reciting aloud the parts which properly belong to them. There are four degrees or stages of this participation: a) First, the congregation may make the easier liturgical responses to the prayers of the priest: Amen; Et cum spiritu tuo; Deo gratias; Gloria tibi Domine; Laus tibi, Christe; Habemus ad Dominum; Dignum et justum est; Sed libera nos a malo; b) Secondly, the congregation may also say prayers, which, according to the rubrics, are said by the server, including the Confiteor, and the triple Domine non sum dignus before the faithful receive Holy Communion; c) Thirdly, the congregation may say aloud with the celebrant parts of the Ordinary of the Mass: Gloria in excelsis Deo; Credo; Sanctus-Benedictus; Agnus Dei; d) Fourthly, the congregation may also recite with the priest parts of the Proper of the Mass: Introit, Gradual, Offertory, Communion. Only more advanced groups who have been well trained will be able to participate with becoming dignity in this manner.

Since the Pater Noster is a fitting, and ancient prayer of preparation for Communion, the entire congregation may recite this prayer in unison with the priest in low Masses; the Amen at the end is to be said by all. This is to be done only in Latin, never in the vernacular.

The faithful may sing hymns during low Mass, if they are appropriate to the various parts of the mass.

Where the rubrics prescribe the clara voce, the celebrant must recite the prayers loud enough so that the faithful can properly, and conveniently follow the sacred rites. This must be given special attention in a large church, and before a large congregation. "
The important thing to remember is that parts apply only to low Masses, while certain parts are proper to all Masses, hence the red numbers. The Indult should make use of this form. It is what is proper and prescribed by the Congregation of Rites.
