I love the Saints! They have so much to give us. I am in awe of their wisdom.

This quote struck me especially just now looking through some quotes from St. Francis de Sales....
It is the mark of a mean, vulgar and ignoble spirit to dwell on the thought of food before meal times or worse to dwell on it afterwards, to discuss it and wallow in the remembered pleasures of every mouthful. Those whose minds dwell before dinner on the spit, and after on the dishes, are fit only to be scullions.
i guess i should add that i would have put this in open mic but felt it would only turn into some sort of joke or something. threads are less often hijacked here.

on another note: what should we take from this teaching of St. Francis de Sales? to what extent does he refer? is it shameful to speak of a good meal in any other way but to praise Jesus quitely and respectfully in our hearts? i guess i've never really thought about it before.

St. Augustine is awesome.... look at this quote:
Complete abstinence is easier than perfect moderation.
I guess if food is your big thrill, you're not very mature or aware of spiritual joys. Which saint was it who accidentally drank oil and didn't even notice?

I don't know what, exactly, one would do to follow St. Francis's advice, here. Probably avoid foods that you're going to obsess over, and try to forget any attachment or pleasure derived from eating as soon as possible.

Another quote, similar subject, that I find rather disheartening:
The day you leave the table without having made some small mortification, you have eaten like a pagan
Ouch.

they should make plates with these quotes like them.

that way I would remember to do the things that they suggest I do... Plus, they'd make great conversation starters.

Plates! Hee.

Then I'd get the Escriva quote one, and after I'd scraped up every little yummy bit, I'd see the quote and go .

It'd have to go around the edge!

St. Escriva is pretty dang hardcore. He is our floor patron at our seminary.

Francis de Sales is my Confirmation Patron Saint, so obviously I love the guy - we pray together every night, actually. His collection of tracts in "Catholic Controversies" is awesome. However, this particular quote could be misunderstood. Although I wouldn't doubt very much that he's being literal, I think the point is to avoid gluttany. I sometimes enjoy reading / hearing food critics, for example, and I love the culinary arts and a good resturant. Don't think anything's wrong with that. If a person is addicted, then the matter becomes different. The difference between a guy who enjoys the pleasures of food and a gluttan is the difference between a guy who enjoys the pleasures of wine and a drunkard.

i guess where the quote struck me was when it said:

it reminds me a lot of a thanksgiving meal. its almost humorous the contradictions there. i think food critics are different than what is described above but i wonder too if maybe we have become a little to 'obsessed' with food and the pleasures it brings us. i dont know really.... just thinking out loud.

:yahoo: Yay! Another seminarian!

:welcome:

You must all wind up humble (like it or not) with St. Escriva as a patron. :ninja:

Reminds me of my backfired fasting experiment. I'd fast twice a week... and every time I spent the whole day thinking about food and/or preparing food for the next day. It was ridiculous.

Dogs are obsessed about food. People shouldn't be. Though I agree that the occasional analysis or fancy meal isn't an issue.

by the time a child is two it is said he will know.... 200? 2000? things by brand name. chips ahoy. frosted flakes. fruit loops. snickers. goldfish. from the time they are lil tots they are surrounded by these foods that are supposedly 'satisfying' but so unhealthy. if we really ate what we should and did not pay much attention to how wonderful our foods were, over 90% of our typical grocery store would be wiped out.

im really liking this quote more and more....

Oh yeah, with advertising the dangers of gluttony are even worse.

And nowadays some of the smartest people in the world engineer foods to be as addictive as possible. Food is a much bigger temptation than in de Sales's time. :ohno:
