rkwright Posted November 10, 2005 Posted November 10, 2005 Hi! I am new to these boards and was brought here by a friend who posts here. I was reading a topic titled 'If the Catholic Church is so right..' refering to the Crusades, reformation, and Orthodoxy. For me the Orthodoxy area is of great interest to me, and I was a little saddened to see the response regarding orthodoxy... "finally, regarding the Orthodox Church, they broke away from the True Faith and their unity as a body is tenuous at best. despite the history and tradition we share w/ them (they even have seven valid scraments) they are not the model of what "Church" should be." I guess my question is asking if you could provide some backing for these statements. They still have valid sacraments as you pointed out, valid priests and Bishops, trace the same roots as we have, draw on the same church fathers, and I would debate your statement on their unity (the nationalistic churches are still in communion with each other). Specifically you're line "they are not the model of what "Church" should be" begs the question what is the model of the Church, where do we get this from, and where did they go wrong? On a side note, am I allowed to clarify or post more questions based on the answers you give me? Or is that more for the 'debate' section...
phatcatholic Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 you can post another question for clarification, as long as it doesn't turn into a prolonged dialogue. we like to keep things short and sweet now, to clarify my statement, the Orthodox Church is not the model of what the Church should be b/c their ecclesiology is erroneous as it concerns the pope as the incarnational presence of the Lord and his primacy as the successor of Peter. they do not acknowledge the singular authority of the pope, and sound ecclesiology is very much centered around this fact. for more on this, see the following entries in the directory: Eastern Orthodoxy: Petrine Primacy and the Papacy http://www.phatmass.com/directory/index.php/cat_id/180 Peter and the Papacy: Primacy of the Bishop of Rome http://www.phatmass.com/directory/index.php/cat_id/90 if that doesn't answer your question, just send me a pm pax christi, phatcatholic
