Era Might Posted November 12, 2005 Posted November 12, 2005 I'm going to dig through this guy's collection tommorow. He says he has about 15,000 records! I asked what the average price is, he said it depends on the album, but the average is 3-10. Is this an average average? I never really went digging before, so I'm not sure what's normal. If you could reply by the morning, I'd appreciate it, as I'm going there before noon. Thanks.
Era Might Posted November 12, 2005 Author Posted November 12, 2005 bump. Just trying to keep this on top.
Era Might Posted November 12, 2005 Author Posted November 12, 2005 bump If someone happens to read this in the middle of the night, please bump it for me. I'm going to bed. :
point5 Posted November 12, 2005 Posted November 12, 2005 i dont dig much for vinyl but I think thats a tad high. Unless you are getting dope records...if you are just digging for like sampling random junk for beats Id dig somewhere cheaper. but if hes got like classic discs then it might be worth it. 86?
Era Might Posted November 12, 2005 Author Posted November 12, 2005 (edited) Cool. I'll be careful. I know he said a lot of them are still in their original packaging, so that may be why. But I'll probably only buy a few today, just to get a feel. He posted on Craigslist, which is how I found him, and someone else posted afterwards saying he was full of BS, if he really had good stuff, he would sell it on ebay. Which is why I was wary. Thanks! dUSt Posted November 12, 2005 Posted November 12, 2005 Don't pay more than a buck for something that you're not sure has dope samples on it. Try to stay under $5 for anything else, unless it is something really good like the Pope's speeches (I have a couple), a read version of the Bible (I have lots of these), or rare story records (no beats, just stories--excellent source of scratch samples). I'm thinking about investing in a portable record player so I can listen before I buy.
Era Might Posted November 12, 2005 Author Posted November 12, 2005 (edited) I just got back. The guy wasn't lying. He had a LOT of boxes to dig through. He had a technics there, too, so I could try them all out. I got 18 records for 100 bucks. They're all pretty much brand new, though. They don't even look like they've been used before. Most were about 5 bucks. He had a "Pope in America" special collectors album I was gonna buy, but he wanted 30 bucks for it, so I passed. Here's what I got:
Bernard Herrman - composer conducting movie tracks, like Psycho, Citizen Kane, etc Eric B. and Rakim - Follow the leader Duke Jupiter - Band in Blue Natural Spiritual - Brother Malachi Favors Mogoustous Live Quincy Jones - The Dude The Charlie Daniels Band - Million Mile Reflections KC and the Sunshine Band - Megamix Instant Funk Beats Breaks and Scratchs - Volume 5 Masters Mixed - Various dope artists, including the Jackson 5 C.J & Co. - Devil's Gun Commodores - All The Great Hits Barry White - Rapsody in White New Breaks Beats & Grooves Breaks and Beats - Various Artists Pearl Jam - Don't know the name; has a sheep on the front Kool and the Gang - Love and Understanding Parliament - Trombipulation
If these were all scratched up, I wouldn't have bought them. But they're in great condition. I think all in all they were worth the extra money. In the long run, though, I'll have to find the scratched up ones. Can't be paying this much every time I get a new pile of records. Edited November 12, 2005 by Era Might
Jabberwocky Posted November 12, 2005 Posted November 12, 2005 I got most of my record albums at rummage sales and such, and I was surprised that most of them looked brand-new. Last year I bought 60 records for 2 bucks at a library sale. Most of them were collector Jazz albums that looked like they'd never been played before. Most people just don't want records anymore. On a side note, I hate games at fairs where people smash vinyl records for prizes. It makes me weak at the knees to witness such things!

I'm gonna head to a flea market right now and see if I can find anything. I wonder if the Salvation Army has any?
Era Might Posted November 12, 2005 Author Posted November 12, 2005 (edited) I didn't find anything at the flea market, but the Salvation Army had a couple hundred records. Most of it was 60s junk, and stuff like Christmas Carols. I got 35. Only a buck a piece. Jackson 5 album was probably the best one I got. It looks brand new. I was surprised at how many religious records they had. Edited November 12, 2005 by Era Might
treebeard Posted November 13, 2005 Posted November 13, 2005 the best place to find really REALLY good R&B and old hip-hop records that i know of is Half-Price Books. check if there's one in your area. depending on which store near you you go to, you can find some great stuff. www.halfpricebooks.com used record stores are worth digging through in general and a lot of fun! there's a LOT of stuff you can find for only a dollar. for an idea on how much certain ones are worth in collector's terms, use www.gemm.com or check out www.vivalavinyl.org, a message board for punk/emo/hardcore record traders (it's like skylab commerce).
point5 Posted November 14, 2005 Posted November 14, 2005 sounds like you got some dope vinyl...good purchase in my opinion.
Dj 86 Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 I find most of them in the dollar bins. Prices for vinyl are so weird.....guess it depeneds on what you want it for. After diggin for a while you start to get an idea of what to pay...kinda like a trial and error thing. I know of people who pay top dollar for records that were already sampled just to have in their collection. As far as the ones you bought.......If you make a nice beat or something with it.....it's worth every penny.
