Lil Red Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 i want to start reading his books, but i don't know which one to start with. what would you recommend for a cradle Catholic youth minister who loves her faith?
prose Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 I LOVED the Screwtape letters. They were interesting, very deep, and really helped me to look more critically at my choices in life. I liked the letter format too, it was easy to pick up and read one letter before bed. I also have given copies of this book to almost everyone I know! I wasn't a HUGE fan of mere Christianity. It was good, but it was more focussed towards atheists. Our Bishop always reccommends the four loves. I haven't read the others. Hope that helps And of course, the Narnia series is great, but you need the time to read it.
Socrates Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 I'm personally a fan of the Space Trilogy, especially Perelandra.
annie Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 A Grief Observed is very tender, emotional and comforting. I loved Mere Christianity, and of course, the Space Trilogy.
scardella Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 I liked Chronicles of Narnia, Screwtape Letters, The Four Loves, Space Trilogy and The Great Divorce. It depends on how deep you feel like reading, because it runs the gamut. I checked off Chronicles, b/c the movie is coming out soon. I figured it'd be the most relevant and talked about b/c of the movie. Also, if you go see it, I tend to prefer reading the book first, if the movie is based on the book. They read really quickly and are a fun read.
Tink Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 Read Mere Christianity if you're into straight-up logic and theology. Soooo amazing. Read Out of the Silent Planet if you're into totally wicked awesome imagery. And read The Great Divorce. Period. It rocks. OH yeah! And Till We Have Faces. So insane.
missionseeker Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 Screwtape Letters is the only one I've read (so far).
Guest Rick777 Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 The Chronicles of Narnia series were all I read in elementary...and harry potter..lol
Isaiah41:13 Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 I love Chronicals of Narnia and I would have voted for that but I didn't see it at the top of the list so I voted for The Screwtape Letters. I am reading it right now (literally as I type this) for one of my English classes. I'm about halfway finished and I think it is really good.
Sojourner Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005
I'm personally a fan of the Space Trilogy, especially Perelandra.
I was going to say exactly that. I also love Til We Have Faces -- it's a fantastic novel.
Totus Tuus Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 I had a hard time choosing between the Chronicles and Screwtape Letters. I would start with the Screwtape Letters, though, definitely.
Lil Red Posted November 23, 2005 Author Posted November 23, 2005 bump - thanks everyone! i'm going to get the Screwtape Letters and the Chronicles are on my amazon wish list
