South Park last night

Okay, I normally don't watch this show, but I was tipped off in advance that the episode would be on Scientology. That made last night's episode too irresistable to watch. I was expecting no less than an all-out slam of Scientology from the show and that is what I got. While they were explaining some of the wacky beliefs, they put up on the screen "This is what Scientologists actually believe." Coming from a show that is usually terrible, this episode did a good job of showing what Scientology really is. Watch it if you can. Avoid the other episodes, except maybe the Mormon one.

The weird part is, the people I was watching with just thought Southpark was making fun of Scientology during the "this is what scientology really believes" part. I had to explain to them that it really IS what they believe and that a science fiction writer founded the cult.

My wife was shocked at what they believed and I had to tell her that it really is what they believe. Then I told her the names of some people who were scientologists and that shocked her too. Isaac Hayes (chef on the show) is scientologist and so is everyone's favorite Fox News reporter, Greta van Susteren.

I wish I could have seen it last night, I've heard good things about it to my boyfriend. Anyways, I wouldn't be suprised if The Church of $cientology tried suing South Park over revealing their secrets and beliefs. They copyright things like crazy and are money happy.

I gotta admit that the creators of that show have the balls to portray $cientology as it really is.

They won't sue. The last part of the episode had Stan yelling, "Go ahead, sue me!" when he was threatened with lawsuits. It really was the creators of South Park and Comedy Central saying that. The credits all read John Smith and Jane Smith.

I wonder if you would have the same attitude had they choosen to make a show on Catholicism?

Don't get me wrong, I believe the 'church' of scientology is one of the most ridiculous piece of work in the last 100 years, and I'd rather be beaten to death by a bunch of squirrels thank have one of my children convert to this farce, but still, imagine for a moment South Park making fun of Catholics? Its not like they would lack any ammo to do so.

Prithee, give some details? Nothing like reminiscing on some anti-Catholicism to brighten up my day.

Why even watch it when it is anti-Catholic episode?

:idontknow:

Just the language and everything, and crude humor, it just disgustes me.

Because one needs to know his adversaries (and ennemies) in order to better deal with them. We cannot ignore other's opinoin of us, that would be foolish (even though we should not let that opinion determine who/what we are and take any negative bearing on our decisions and lifestyles).

Oh, I never thought about it that way, but still...I just pray for the conversion of poor sinners.

The anti-Catholic episode was total parody. I think everyone knows that there aren't alien Catholics and there is no queen spider. The claims of the episode are so far fetched that no one can possibly believe that Catholics really believe that. The mormon and scientology episodes, however, present real teachings of those religions. There are bits of subtle humor in the series, like everyone goes to hell except the mormons, who picked the right religion. That is ironic because mormons don't believe in hell and that people are awarded various degrees of heaven.

I don't watch South Park, but from what I hear, their humor is basically nihilistic and pokes fun at everything. They don't seem to be specifically anti-Catholic, but see all religion as an object of silly ridicule and humor.

I did think "Team America" (which basically avoids religion) was freakin' hilarious! The hardest hit targets in that movie were hollywood liberals and terrorists.

Stone and Parker are basically silly vulgar clowns who see nothing as sacred, rather than committed adversaries or enemies with a "message."
I'm not condoning all their humor, just pointing something out.
