DAF Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005 So there's plenty of apologetics to justify catholicism to non catholics and non christians alike, but i am unable to find anything to justify it to judiasm. I've asked a similiar question before, but this time she's (the jewish girl i often talk to but rarely engage in arguments about faith becasue she doens't like it) asked something similiar to: If Christians are messianic Jews, why don't they observe the holidays and all the traditions and beliefs of the Jews? Now mind you, that's about as specific as she every gets. usually it's like "God wouldn't change his Word with a new testament!!!" but with worse spelling. So, I know that with Jesus caqme a new authority, but can somebody explain to me in as much detail is as humanly possible, how does one justify christianity to a jew? danke schon In Christ
Paphnutius Posted November 22, 2005 Posted November 22, 2005
If Christians are messianic Jews, why don't they observe the holidays and all the traditions and beliefs of the Jews?
Because we have the New Covenant. Also, we do preserve some beliefs: monotheism, reward of afterlife, God's mercy and grace, etc...
So, I know that with Jesus caqme a new authority, but can somebody explain to me in as much detail is as humanly possible, how does one justify christianity to a jew?
This would require an entire book.......OR......the wonderful phatmass apologetics section. I would recommend looking up how and why Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah, the Anointed One of the prophesies. Then you will get somewhere. You have to show that Christ is the fulfillment of the Law and prophesy.

DAF Posted November 23, 2005 Author Posted November 23, 2005 danke schon I'll dig into these...right now! I was just at the local JP 2 library, but didn't really have the time to look around for what i need. I'll do it tomorrow.
photosynthesis Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 check out this website: http://hebrewcatholic.org/ first of all, Christians are not messianic Jews. Christians are Christians. Messianic Judaism is a whole different kettle of fish, and their theology is pretty protestant (i.e. faith alone, scripture alone, etc). How do you justify the truth of the Gospel to Jews? The same way you would with anyone else. The Gospel is Good News to all who listen with an open mind. Unfortunately, a lot of people don't have open minds, and it's important to know a lot of the common objections that a lot of Jewish people have towards Catholicism... - Many Jews are afraid to convert because they worry that they would lose their culture. Judaism isn't just a religion, it is a culture, and a nation. However, there are so many Jewish elements to Catholicism, especially in the Liturgy. The Mass is the Passover feast, Mary is the new Ark of the Covenant, our Tabernacles house the Word of God, who is Jesus Christ. Similarly, Jews believe in Purgatory, they just don't call it Purgatory, and Judaism is based on principles of Scripture and Tradition (because Moses was given the written Torah and the oral Torah... people think Catholics just made this stuff up, but we didn't!) Encourage your friend to read the Bible with you, and you can help her see the parallels...
phatcatholic Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 Second Exodus is another awesome website you can use to show how Catholicism is the fulfillment of Judaism http://www.secondexodus.com/
