I been thinking about this off and on, here it goes

I have reasons to believe that a former employer owes me some money. I dont know an exact amount, nor am I going to discuss dollars and cents in this thread, but I believe I have some money that could be mine.

But, the owners have declared bankrupcy since then (and thats how I lost my job).. this left me with some checks the bank would not honor. ( I dont make it to the bank often, didn't then either).

Im not expecting everyone to be a financial expert here(though it could help) I simply am wondering if I should purse this, or let it go as an act of charity?

It might not even be there anymore because of this bankrupcy, can't findmy name on any of the Unclaimed Fund serches.

Im actually a little nervous about posting this, wish phatmass would of let me register another name then do it.

If you didn't get paid, you are a creditor to the company. You are supposed to receive a letter from the bankruptcy courts with a form to fill out

With that you can list what they owe you.

don't get too excited though. I've done a few of these and have never gotten any money. You may end up getting cents on the dollar.

From a charity point of view, doing this is not uncharitable. If they hadn't declared bankruptcy and you wanted to let it slide, that's one thing. But once they declared, they are literally out of the picture. Its their assets that are being divided amongst the people who were not paid.

I would get proactive on it. If you have the check stubs that weren't honored (and if you don't your bank has a photocopy of them) call the bankruptcy court and find out who the case has been assigned to.

Yep, hot stuff's right. You should file a claim against the bankruptcy estate. There's only a certain amount of time the estate is open, though, so I wouldn't dawdle if I were you.

When is a good time to dawdle?

When is dawdling appropriate?

Dawdling is appropriate when there is rose-smelling involved.

I suppose no harm would come if one were to dawdle while meandering

Yes, there are times when it's appropriate to linger longer.

wow thats intersting, thanks for your insght on how the bankrupcy system works. I was not aware that they were out of the picture once they declaired bankrupcy, and it became a Government and I thing.

Thank you.

Tony, who is laying a manipulative guilt trip on you making you think that claiming what is rightfully yours somehow will make God mad????

I think its a tricky thing for a lot of people Cow. When people or companies screw you out of money, it generates a lot of bad feelings for some folks. Plus if you consider the the people to be friends, it only exacerbates the issue. For some reason, (and I haven't thought it all through yet) being upset about money issues leaves some folks (like me) feeling dirty or sinful. I don't know if that's a culture thing overall or specifically a Catholic thing.

I never considered that there would be a day when I would be able to say "Oh yeah, that guy still owes me a few grand".

When bankruptcy has been declared, I've tried to go get my money. But there have been times when it hasn't been declared and I haven't pursued it. Simply because while the person was not being a friend to me, I wanted to honor the memory of when they were a friend.

yeah I simply didn't want to add insult to injury basically..

remind you, I did not know that once bankrupt , its all turned over to the government to figure out, so thinking this, I did not want to rub salt in the wounds sorta speak.

Sounds like 'forgiveness' and 'enabling' can get a bit mixed up, then.

I'm wondering about your abilities to judge people if you've had to deal with multiple 'friends' that you've lent money to going bankrupt....

Say, do you have a grand or two handy? I've got this project I'm working on, and I'm coming up a bit short...

hehe

I can understand why you feel guilty about getting upset over money....we've had it driven into us that love of money is wrong. If you get worked up over money issues, then you must be lusting after some hot Franklin on Grant greenback action, and that makes you BAD BAD BAD.
