Lounge Daddy Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005
Canadian politicians will hit the campaign trail this holiday season after opposition parties seized upon a corruption scandal to bring down the minority government of Prime Minister Paul Martin in a vote of no confidence. Monday's loss means an election for all 308 seats in the lower House of Commons, likely on Jan. 23. Martin and his Cabinet will continue to govern until then. The Conservative Party teamed up with the New Democratic and Bloc Quebecois parties to bring down the government, claiming the ruling Liberal Party had lost its moral authority. Recent polls have given the Liberals a slight lead over the Conservatives, with the New Democrats in third place. The same surveys suggest the Bloc Quebecois would sweep the French-speaking province of Quebec, making a majority government unlikely no matter which party wins the most seats. Nathan Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 The Liberal Party will in all probability retain their stranglehold on Canada. They've been in power for so long, Canadian citizens have become convinced that the Liberal way is the only way; that the Liberal government is Canada. It's really sad. The Conservative Party right now under Stephen Harper has the best chance they've had at toppling the Liberals since the 1980's -- mostly due to the Liberal government having recently been exposed as a bunch of crooks (the Gomery Report), which is the whole reason why Canadians are headed to the polls. But, again, Canadians have just grown too comfortable under the long leadership of the Liberals. They'd rather have a corrupt government that they're familiar with than a good, accountable government they're not familiar with. It's like Canada is in this complacent fog. We're terrified of change, even positive change. Another factor is that the average Canadian (in central Canada anyway, which makes for most of the population) doesn't like to think of himself as a "conservative." It has become a bad, dirty word here -- it is akin to being "rigid," "cold," "closed-minded," and a "war-monger," which is totally ridiculous, but that's the way it is. I truly think that if the Conservative Party had a different name, they would fare better at the polls. People just aren't willing to look past the party's name. Ah, well. I know I'll be doing my part and voting Conservative in January.
Tony Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 I know someone that moved from the States to Canada.. she is pretty liberal/anti-bush, etc ,So I think this is one of the reasons she moved to Canada. I don't really consider her a friend anymore, so I it would be kinda funny (to me) if the liberal government went away.
Nathan Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 I've heard about American leftists moving to Canada after the US went to war with Iraq. And believe me, what with abortion-on-demand, gay marriage, and a socialist healthcare system, Canada is a liberal's wet dream come true. Here's to hoping their utopian vacation gets cut short.
Guest T-Bone Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 I just hope we don't let them back in...
prose Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 the Conservative government is like all the rest of them. They are all corrupt and unreliable. I don't know what to do in January... I don't like any of my options!
Fishmaker Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 It is clear that the conservative party is the obvious way to vote in the upcomming election. Although I dont know how sucessful they will be with harper as the leader....The Liberals have done enough damage to this country its time to cork them up. Wake up Canada!!!!!!

Guest Servus Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 My problem with the Conservatives is that they have a very strong Evengelical Protestant core ie Baptiste, Pentecost. This concerns me. I know Martin isn't a great example of a Catholic leader, as he's just another politician pandering to the prolatariate, and willing to say or do anything to stay in power. However I fear for Catholic education, as well as French language rights.

Harper is a lot like Bush; Martin is a lot like Kerry. The problem with Catholics voting Liberal (or in the US, Democrat) is that the party no longer represents Catholic values. Those days are long gone. All Christians -- Catholics and Protestants -- need to put their differences aside for a little while and join forces if they are to win the war on the prevailing atheistic liberalism and socialism in our country, and in the State, and the horrible erosion of morality that comes with it. Right now, that means voting Conservative. There is no other way.

Church Punk Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 Well as history has it, Canadians tend to be very patient when things of this nature occur. We put up with stuff for so long and then at the next election they seem to wipe the slate clean destroying whatever party was in power. Look at the NDP in the 70s The PCs in the 80s with Mulroney. They were wiped completely to oblivion. Now look at the last election, it was very close, the Liberals winning with a minority government. With all the new controversies that have raised, Gromery report, Gay marriage, abortion ect, and just the fact the Martin is an Imbecile (of course he is from Windsor!!!) LOL. I would not be surprised if something of that magnitude happened in January.
Church Punk Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 Just speculating who the next imbecile will be that will be in charge of the country
