beatty07 Posted December 7, 2005 Posted December 7, 2005 So the former editor of the English version of L'Osservatore Romano just gave a lecture at my seminary today. It was all very interesting and enlightening but this is a gem... Remember about 7 or 8 years ago when everyone on Earth was quoting John Paul II that Hell is not a place, but more of a state of mind or something? Well what he said (I don't remember if it was in Italian or Latin) was "More than just a place..." Which is completely different and totally changes the statement. However, the editor was on vacation that week and the translator gaffed it as "Rather than a place..." Some of us won't remember, but this was a huge splash at the time. I mean it was even coming up in my mega-state university modernist philosophy classes. And then all these people were rushing in to save orthodoxy by constructing elaborate apologetics for something the Pope didn't say. And others were loudly proclaiming the victory of reason and common sense over the medieval superstitious nonsense of Hell. All because the editor of L'Osservatore Romano took a week's vacation.
Aloysius Posted December 7, 2005 Posted December 7, 2005 sweeeeeeeeet! I always knew hell was a place!

N/A Gone Posted December 7, 2005 Posted December 7, 2005 If always thought that hell was a place, the only place of debate I have is that I dont think the fire is literal. Im alil too JP moorland in this
Aloysius Posted December 7, 2005 Posted December 7, 2005 it doesn't necessarily have to be literal, it's just that there must be actual active punishment from God. not just separation from communion with Him which is basically passive punishment administered on the part of God, i.e. simply leaving them alone, but the active infliction of just punishment.
N/A Gone Posted December 7, 2005 Posted December 7, 2005 lack of anything God, including the emotional realisation of what happened seems rather harsh oh yea, and we are kind of not at the top of the food chain if you have read screwtape
Guest T-Bone Posted December 7, 2005 Posted December 7, 2005 I always thought of Hell as an eternaly cold and dark place with "things" creeping about, gnashing thier teeth. Alot more scary/unpleasant than mere fire.
homeschoolmom Posted December 7, 2005 Posted December 7, 2005 Whatever... I really don't want to know...
The Joey-O Posted December 7, 2005 Posted December 7, 2005 You know, I sorta wonder about Hell being a place. I don't think places exist.
