Pornographic?

Hey, all, since I have to report pornography stored on people's computers if I run across it, I wanted to know what y'all think (and not necessarily as it applies to my job, though). Do things like the Sports Illustrated swimsuit models pictures constitute pornography? Why or why not?

Considering the affective character of the images, and the way it’s marketed, which reveals something of the intent behind it, I'd say its soft porn.

It is the objectification of women because their sexual value is emphasized disproportionately in such a way as to excite men and stimulate erotic ideation.

And I remember ads in which it was suggested that women get this for their boyfriend or husband as a gift. This type of material is not conducive to a healthy attitude toward sexuality and women in general. It is promoting infidelity, lust and the devaluing of women.

At my first reporting job, one of the photographers there (who is thankfully no longer working as a newspaper photographer) had a collection on his computer of female high school cheerleaders and swimmers that he'd photographed. Let's just say he wasn't keeping it for his portfolio.

I wouldn't categorize it as pornography, but I'd categorize his response to the photos as disordered. Could SI swimsuit issues be in the same category?

There is clearly an erotic intent behind the swimsuit magazines. I think this is a crucial factor. This intent is clear in their marketing, for one must ask, what else is the purpose of the magazine? It's not a swimsuit catalogue, and the target audience is men. This alone makes it quite obvious. And the women often appear wanton and seductive. Not that I've looked at the thing, but I've had junk mail for it and I saw enough to get a sense of what the magazine is about.

It's worse than I thought.

I did a search and went to the website for this magazine, and it is even more strongly erotic than I had supposed.

[ link was here ]

Don't go here if mostly naked women in seductive poses, revealing much cleavage and wet silky skin might create a temptation to erotic ideation or an assurgency of passions.

The link is really intended for women who might doubt the explicitly sexual nature of this magazine.

[edit: me] I decided to remove the link so as not to create a possible moment of temptation for anyone. Although, these days you can see just as much in the check out line of the grocery store. :sadder:

I don't think you would be able to report under the category of porn (so many things are borderline "soft porn" that toe the line in the mainstream like LD said) but might possibly be reported as inappropriate use of state or company resources, especially if there is a lot of it. I worked for a public institution for a few years so this was discussed quite a bit. There are times when friends and co-workers will send gag pictures and jokes that are found on computers and people usually don't pay too much attention to it. But yeah, you can probably tell when people are downloading steamy things not so randomly for inappropriate reasons.

not to be nasty, but softcore needs nipple. non-nipple is not soft-core.

its nasty, but unless their is a "daddy sword" it isnt hardcore, softcore can be alot of vulgar things, but technically maxim, fhm, and SIswmisuit are not considered softcore..

now, in a work enviroment you can easily explain that these are derogatory and make you feel uncomfortable. Thus still be able to change the policy. But if u claim its softcore someone will laugh and not help you.

I do think the idea of the swimsuit stuff is "wimpy erotic." They want to create suggestive pictures without being socially unacceptable. I agree w/ L_D in that it objectifies the models.

Thank you for removing the link. I don't have internet at home anymore, so I can't really be temped, lest I want to be booted out of FUS, but I know more than a few dozen guys here that would probably do more than some clicking.
