Nude dancing ban proposed in Grand Rapids
City officials say they expect legal challenges over the proposed ordinance.

Judy Rose says she's up for the fight.

"I happen to be a born-again Christian who wants my city to be clean and safe and pure."

Rose and other members of the Black Hills Neighborhood Association, along with city officials, outlined their plan of attack against an adult oriented entertainment complex set to open next spring about a mile from their neighborhood.

"I don't want these kinds of establishments to be able to run willy-nilly and do anything they want to do. I want some regulations," said Rose.

But the owner of two businesses targeted by the ordinance, Sensations Night Club and the proposed Showgirl's Gallaria, says if the city adopts this law, get ready for a fight; a long and expensive one.

"I had hoped the city fathers would have been strong enough to have protected my constitutional rights from this kind of attack, instead of joining it," says Mark London.

No one at city hall is against the ordinance, and the city attorney says it will stand up to a court fight.

[b]The question becomes, at what cost?

Remember, the city is in the midst of a fiscal crisis.

City officials estimate the cost of such a fight could be upwards of $125,000.

London, the business owner, says that figure is probably low.

At least one commissioner says the cost of defending the ordinance could be a deal-breaker.

"What we need is to hear from our legal council as to what the percentage is we have of winning it and how much the cost is to fight it in court," says Second Ward City Commissioner Rick Tormala.

Supporters of the ordinance say they plan to create a defense fund to help offset those costs.

The commission is expected to take up the issue in January.
im curious where his money is commin' from

any case, its interesting how liberals can't win at the ballot box - so they gain thier wins behind the voter's backs

I find it interesting how liberals often claim to be categorically against "big business," unless that big business happens to involve sex. ;)

Don't forget to add abortion and contraceptive businesses to the list! You don't see any uproar about all the money PP rakes in a year or when they open more clinics!

Aaand, now that I think about it, they all have to do with sex, and not owing to the responsibility that sex and pregnancy result in; a baby!

I find it interesting that a night club owner who has money to spend on lawsuits is automatically considered a liberal

Exactly how do you know his politics?

Sex-related businesses bring in so much cash they can afford to pay big legal fees to fight ordinances while they're in operation. The amount they bring in while cases are pending is more than enough to outweigh what's spent on lawyers.

It seems to me the city would be hard-pressed to come up with an ordinance banning nude dancing which would fall within constitutional bounds. Indianapolis just finished up a 2-year legal battle over an ordinance that simply regulates sex-related businesses.

And re: the liberal jab, I know a bunch of Republicans who patronize strip clubs. Sex knows no politics.

I definitely agree, but there are many who think otherwise.

It is cold here, but we have these things called "buildings with central heating," so that plan of elimination might not work.....

Oh and the whole "liberal" thing..... he meant morally liberal/permissive, obviously, lol....

A youngin, eh?

Well, I personally wouldn't want to dance nude (not that anyone's been asking) but some people find nude dancing to be titillating.

I am not condoning this type of facility/ business at all and I do not care for them either.

However after pondering this, I have been drawn to this conclusion: For the sake of those poor girls who can find no way out but to work at the clubs or worse the streets, and if they can maintain their job at the club and not get caught up in the other things that go on there (drugs & prostitution). It would provide them with a very safe environment than the alternative (being a street prostitute).

As far as I know in the USA there are laws that prevent any of the patrons from even touching the girls and they are not allowed to be completely nude. It is a different story up here in Canada but in Grand Rapids I am sure that is the law. These girls would be able to maintain a certain level of dignity while making enough money to support their self and keep them off of the streets for a time.

However I do not support the owners of these clubs at all and the business because of the environment and element of control and abuse most seem to hold over their employees. I have know several girls who have found their selves working at these clubs for various reasons and to see the changes in their life, both spiritual and emotionally, getting involve with drugs etc.

I believe that it would not be beneficial to open more complex’s in the area and would only lead a negative vortex of emotional and spiritual well being in the area. But in the worst case where these women that cannot find a way out and are considering prostitution. I believe that working at a strip club would be a viable temporary solution.

Ideally they would choose not have to go through and would return to God and be truly healed, but this is not the case for a lot of these women. That is why we need to preach the Good News to all, to prevent these people from falling into these pits in the first place. We need to do everything in our power to prevent these tragedies from happening.
