phatcatholic Posted December 18, 2005 Posted December 18, 2005 to relinquish power, or rather, the relinquishing of power (the first definition would actually be for "abdicate")
franciscanheart Posted December 18, 2005 Author Posted December 18, 2005
to relinquish power
but like what happens when like a bishop abdicates his position? someone was talking about this today and how they wished our bishop would have like 4 years ago... i got lost.
phatcatholic Posted December 18, 2005 Posted December 18, 2005 i suppose it would mean "to retire" or step-down so that someone else can be the bishop.
franciscanheart Posted December 18, 2005 Author Posted December 18, 2005 yeah i think theres like a certain process that has to happen and apparently its really complicated and unless something really grave happened they wouldnt do this... and then once they do step down there is another process that has to take place. why is everything so complicated? here's another one.... can you like... impeach... a bishop? (i dont know much about this stuff)
phatcatholic Posted December 18, 2005 Posted December 18, 2005
here's another one.... can you like... impeach... a bishop? (i dont know much about this stuff)
well, a priest (or bishop) can be stripped of the right to exercise his priestly faculties. i forget the word for this (its late, i'm tired, and a little grumpy) but it happened to some of the priests who were involved in the sex-abuse scandal. so, i guess in that sense, yea, a bishop can be "impeached." however, a pope cannot, for there is not higher authority than the papacy.
franciscanheart Posted December 18, 2005 Author Posted December 18, 2005 aw dont be grumpy.... its sad to me that so many people want my bishop out of his office but i guess i never really thought it possible to actually have him removed... i mean i did... but i didnt. and since a lot of people wont move to have him removed... some say theyre "prayin for abdication" anyway...

journeyman Posted December 18, 2005 Posted December 18, 2005 dismissal from the clerical state is one way it's phrased in the Code of Canon Law (1364, 1367, 1370, 1387, 1394, 1395) or simply deprivation of office . . . 1389, 1396 I would think excommunication (1364, 1267, 1370, 1378, 1382, 1388, 1398) or interdict (1370, 1373, 1374, 1378, 1380, 1390, 1394) might also be a cause for relinquishing the crozier http://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG1104/_INDEX.HTM
