Brother Adam Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 if your wife's girlfriend wants you to write her an email because her boyfriend is lutheran and she's baptist, and she wants to know what lutherans believe because you were once a lutheran regarding salvation and you also wanted to use it as a movement of evangelization, how would you write the email?
homeschoolmom Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 I would use more than one sentence...
Theoketos Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 Seriously though, be as accurate as you can about both Luthern and Baptist views on salvation...
Brother Adam Posted December 21, 2005 Author Posted December 21, 2005 But how is that a moment of evangelization? I thought maybe I should write it being accurate about Lutheran views and how they are contrary to scripture (showing the correct Catholic view)? and also show what is accurate (infant baptism).
Jaime Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 Its hard to discern from the compound sentence but Are you trying to help convert the boyfriend into Lutheranism?
homeschoolmom Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 Seriously, Adam, it would probably be helpful to find out which Lutheran beliefs he possesses. Even if you know his synod, he may not hold to all the official beliefs.

Weren't you also baptist? I think Paul's method in Acts 17 is a starter for any discussion regarding salvation. You meet her where she is at. Find the truth in the Lutheran view. Find the truth in the Baptist view and then use those truths to explain to her the Catholic view. i.e. the Lutherans believe in Infant Baptism. Why from a Biblical perspective is IB the thing to do? I.e. 1 Peter 3:20, baptism now saves you, Mark 16, Acts 2:38. Baptists have a view of salvation that focuses on Christ being the only means of salvation. That is a good in their belief. However Christ alone for salvation does not mean that Christ is alone and does not work through others. "how does one believe unless he is sent a preacher?". Don't know if this is clear or not. Emphasize the truths in the two is my point.
Laudate_Dominum Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 A friend of mine recently introduced to me one of the coolest books that I've seen on comparative Christian Theology: Symbolik, oder, Darstellung der dogmatischen Gegensätze Katholiken und Protestanten nach ihren öffentlichen Bekenntnisschriften Otherwise known as: Symbolism—Exposition of the Doctrinal Differences Between Catholics and Protestants as Evidenced by Their Symbolic Writings It's by Johann Adam Möhler. I haven't read the whole thing, but I was able to flip through it and read some sections last time I was at my buddy's house and I was drooling. I think it would be right up your alley.

Understood. But you still have the right if you are writing an email to say, I cannot support such a veiw and here is why. These points I agree on and these I disagree on. You don't even have to mention Catholicism and it's probably best not if that is her attitude. But you should be able to take a generic biblical approach.

I tend to think of Lutheranism as the early stuff, Luther's writings and the statement of faith contained in the Book of Concord. I guess if the main issue is just soteriology that would narrow it down a lot.

I was ELCA, with strong ties to our WELS parish down the street. Generically, most Lutherans hold to similiar tenants, though mostly, people are just confused about the finer points of the faith and are Lutheran for the same reason folks belong to Polish National Churches, its a family thing.
Jaime Posted December 21, 2005 Posted December 21, 2005 The question is How is this a point of evangilization?
