Nathan Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 Man, my sister got an electronic scale for Christmas and I just weighed myself -- I hadn't weight myself in about a year. In the past year, I have gained about 30 pounds! (I must carry it really well, because I haven't really noticed the extra weight and nobody has commented on it. Maybe they were just being polite...) What is YOUR strategy for healthy weight loss? One thing is for sure, I'm cutting out soda (I've been drinking waaaay too much of it lately) as well as heavy carbs like pasta and bread (which I've also been indulging in like a pig). Exercising regularly again won't hurt, either.
Thy Geekdom Come Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 When I was in seminary, I went on a really stupid diet and lost 29 lbs. in six weeks. Not healthy...
cmotherofpirl Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 Cut out the pop, drink water or tea. Eat all the non-starchy veggies you can. Cut out the potatoes, bread, pasta, corn and peas, and pizza. walk at least a mile a day. Watch yourself shrink. Do this for the rest of your life. and it will BE a longer life

scardella Posted December 26, 2005 Posted December 26, 2005 Eat less, move around more... I haven't really been able to work out since Katrina... I've noticed a few more pounds...

Pop doesnt exsist. On the topic, I think I need to start running again. *grabs some salad* I don't think I've gained weight, but I have lost some muscle.
philothea Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 Obviously, avoid all the caloric drinks, junk food, and bulk starches. (I have always done this, however, and I was still overweight.) Figure out what you tend to overeat. Avoid it like it's poison. Find an exercise you love. This may take some doing. Once you love it, it's easy to stick with. And finally... get a snazzy new iBook that you want to play with all your waking hours and would never, ever dare get any food near... (-15 lbs so far )

I've noticed a few more pounds...
No.... Do not eat less unless you are eating to the point of being stuffed. When someone starts cutting out the amount of food it is hard to gauge what amount the need to eat. Do not cut out quantity, work on quality. Carbs are essential to your body because they provide a good source of energy. Limit their intake, but do not take them out all together. Protein builds tissue be it fat or muscle. If you are not active all day that protein goes into building fat not muscle. If you are active, the protein repairs the muscles and builds it. The best way to loose weigh is to find out about how many calories you exert each day. Then moderate your intake accordingly. I think it takes a loss of 3500 calories to loose one pound. It is really only health on your body to loose 2-3 pounds a weeks so that means your diet should be adjusted to that amount. The important thing is to find that balance between calorie intake and use. It is also helpful to limit sugar intake. So do try to cut out Pop and candy but be sure to replace it with water and vegetables. In summary: Do not eat less, eat better and exercise. It does take work. I lost about 25 pounds safely by cutting out fatty foods high in calories and exercising 45 minutes 5 days a week. It is not a miracle and the fat will not just fall off of you, that is unhealthy.

I once spilled red wine all over a brand new white carpet, so we poured selzer all over it and you would never notice that we spilled red wine on it! as for weight loss, I need to lose weight too. it's really difficult... but i guess I'd say avoid eating right before you go to bed, but i'm not good at practicing what I preach!

I used to drink 3 regular Cokes a day, and then I switched to diet soda to satisfy my caffeine addiction, and I lost about 20 pounds very quickly by doing nothing extra. It's stayed off, too. Deeds Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 Use a calorie needs calculator such as this one to calculate how many calories you need to eat per day to maintain your current weight. Subtract 500 and stick to this limit. This should produce a weight loss of 1-2 lbs per week (more at the beginning).

Not entirely. A lot of diets are good for you, but those that say you need to stay away from carbs and the like are not. It is best to consult your physician about such things. I think a lot of it boils down to common sense though. If you have a choice between a tiple layer chocolate cake and a bowl of mixed fresh fruit...go with the fruit.
prose Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 Here's a novel idea: How about talk to your doctor about which weight loss program would be best for you? Some are high protein, some are low calorie, sometimes, it is just that you need to excercise a few minutes a day. Good Luck!!
gonzaga Posted December 27, 2005 Posted December 27, 2005 you'll be ok man, just don't give into temptation. mmmmmmmmmmmdonuts...
