Girls and bullying

So there was a bit this morning on the today show about girls and bullying, and they're talking about this like it's a "new" phenomenon, as if girls have never been mean and cutting to one another.

I have personally experienced or witnessed every one of the rude behaviors detailed in the piece during my own child/teenhood, with the exception of mean IMs/e-mails/text messages (didn't have that stuff when I was a kid). It's just so weird that they're saying this stuff is "new" or "different" behavior ... where have these people [i]been[/i]?

This isn't new behavior at all. All they have to do is talk to anyone who ever went to middle school.

Exactly. I just don't see why all the hype now.

Personally, I think girls bully worse than boys. Boys fight it out and its over. Girls drag out their bullying forever and can be just plain vicious.

Exactly. Girls are so much more vindictive as a group. We can be pretty cruel.

Yeah, I'd agree with the above. During my childhood, I was on the receiving end of a few bullying incidents by both boys and girls and getting tripped up or pushed by boys was nothing compared with the emotional cruelty that girls can inflict.

When I was in 5th grade a bunch of african american girls decided they were going ot beat me up. I ran up one of the playground equiment steel structures (space ship type object). One of the girls started climbing it while the rest waited on the ground below. I jumped off past the girls and ran like hell into the school building.

I knew better then, and know better now than to mess with girls.

I got bullied by a boy in second grade once. And once [b]I[/b] beat up a neighbor kid for defacing one of my dolls. But I was never on the receiving end of physical bullying by girls. All emotional.
