Old_Joe Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Utinam logica falsa tuam philophiam totam suffodiant! May faulty logic undermine your entire philosophy! Utinam barbari spatium proprium tuum invadant! May Barbarians invade your personal space! Deus Ex Machina literally it means, "God from the Machine" It's a literary term that refers to a sudden change of events for the agonist in which a solution for a seemingly impossible situation is presented. In Classical theater, gods and/or godesses were lowered onto the stage using a crane of some kind, a machine.

Thy Geekdom Come Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006
Cato the Elder, actually
I learned it as Gaius Marius...learned that he had said it right before doing it. Evidence on the web seems to say Cato. My textbook lied to me. ...or I don't remember... Oh well. :
Niccolò Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 (edited) haha I don't think Gaius Marius was around for the 3rd Punic War, he came a bit after. Cato the Elder used to end every speech he made, regardless of the subject matter, w/ that quote (he really thought Carthage was a menace, for good reason). Edited January 3, 2006 by Niccolò
Thy Geekdom Come Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Always was better with Latin than with history. :
Niccolò Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 I like this one: ave Caesar morituri te salutant--hail Caesar, those who are about to die salute you
Thy Geekdom Come Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres, quarum unam incolunt Belgae, aliam Aquitani, tertiam qui ipsorum lingua Celtae (nostra Galli appellantur). Hi omnes lingua, institutis, legibus inter se differunt. Gallos ab Aquitanis Garumna Flumen Matrona et Sequana dividit. I had to memorize that my third year.
scardella Posted January 3, 2006 Posted January 3, 2006 Veni, veni emmanuel... O come, o come, emmanuel.. Quo vadis? Where are you going? Carpe Diem! Seize the day! Semper Fidelis (semper fi) Always faithful igPay atinLay! Veni, vidi, vici. I came, I saw, I conquered. Perl mater linguae totae est. Perl is the mother of all languages. (I just made it up, is it correct?)
