OLAM Dad Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 I am sooooooo tempted to respond with a very snarky comment. OK, I'm better now. I'm not sure what the difference is.
Era Might Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Hip Hop = The culture Rap = One element of the culture The four elements are: Graffiti Breakdance DJ MC (aka rapper)
musturde Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 I personally dont see them as different. I'd use them interchangably but some people like to be way too technical with the usage of words. Rap - rhyming lyrics are chanted to a musical accompaniment; several forms of rap have emerged Hiphop - rhyming lyrics are chanted to a musical accompaniment; several forms of rap have emerged I checked a dictionary for your amusement. As you can see, they are somewhat similar Hip Hop is supposedly a "lifestyle" breakdancing rapping djing graffiti Rap is the music.

Hip hop is like any other music...can be abused or it can be elevated by him in him and with him. A lot of people have only seen the predominant degrading hip hop culture that is in America. To say hey take a joke is a bit much when you are talking about what someone sheds blood sweat and tears for.

I am Afro-Carribean myself and as such I consider Rap my music together with Raggae and RnB. Rap is a part of my culture. Of course not all rap artists are making overtly positive music but is anyone? Not all pop music or rock music is wholesome either. Indeed, a lot of pop is overtly sexual and some rock music even encourages the overt religious worship of the devil. I've heard a lot of rap that encourages sinful actions but never Satantic rap which I guess is score one to us against rock. Although since Adam humans have been blaming everyone else for what goes wrong 'it was the woman you gave me...' I think its a bit unfair to use black cultural phenomena as a placebo for the wrongs of the world. The culture that the angry, pleasure seeking, music you hear these days emerged from was created by ourselves. Can we blame the buds for sprouting from the seeds we planted? There's a reason why the majority of people buying rap in the Western world are white middle class kids... Rap was emerging at the same time as drug inspired grunge, heavy metal and the new pop ala Madonna 'like a virgin'. Hip Hop and its popularity tells me much more about the environment in which it grew and allowed it to flourish than anything else. America and the West in general has followed the downward spiral into nihilism for decades until the pervading philosophical influences on our civilisation are altered dont expect a huge change in the music it produces either. Rap, rock and pop are not to blame for the direction they've taken since the so-called 'Sexual Revolution'. We must look in the mirror for the culprit of that crime.

Church Punk Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Rap is probably the only music that truly delivers the message. In rock and other music, you are limited lyrically in the way that word sounds with the given music. In rap, it is simply poetry expressed through music (primarily beats and other sounds), the lyrics can be of anything. This in a special way gives rap a unique edge of delivery a message and expressing ones self. So to speak, you can say what you mean or exaggerate it ..."feels like i gotta midget hang'n from my necklace!" Now apply this medium to the Catholic culture and we now have a powerful tool of reaching the youth, the inner city people, gangs and what not. The Church can now evangelize to these people by bringing Christ to their culture. Lord knows how many of these people Fr. Stan has reached through his rap and music in the Bronx!
dUSt Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Rap is to hip-hop as singing is to rock n roll. It's pretty simple. They're not the same thing. You wouldn't say "Wow, his voice and delivery is great, he really hip-hopped that song pretty good." -or- "Man, that shirt is so rap". Down with the haters.

musturde Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 And about the two urbandictionary posts dissing rap and hiphop...give it a rest. If it was attacking your race or making up misleading information that people would actually take seriously, i'd understand. I seriously don't care what the site has to say because people post negative comments on every subject/person listed on there. I know how some rappers might feel about this(I can relate) but no one can say he or she hasn't come upon a person who despises their favorite form of art/music.
Circle_Master Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Often it seems in rap that you make words for the music, and in hip hop you make music for your words. In other words, hip hop is more musically integrated than most rap. You don't have freestyle hip hop artists, you have freestyle rap artists. Or are there freestyle hip hop artists? As far as I know that doesn't happen.
Era Might Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 We don't have a band/ It's just my voice and his hands/ That's what hip hop was/ It still stands --Rakim
