zunshynn Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006 I know all of the sacraments were instituted by Christ, but where do the Gospels talk about Jesus instituting the anointing of the sick?
Paphnutius Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006
I know all of the sacraments were instituted by Christ, but where do the Gospels talk about Jesus instituting the anointing of the sick?
There is proof in Scripture from the letter of St. James calling for people to go to the presbyter of the community. This is because the ceremony described here has both form an element. The remote matter of the sacrament is olive oil blessed by the bishop (or priest by delegation). The sacrament is not valid if the oil is not blessed, and it is doubtful if the oil actually used is the OC or SC. The proximate matter of the sacrament is the anointing of the sick person. At the time of the book six anointings were given: eyes, ears, nose, mouth, hands, and feet. In certain circumstances the feet may be omitted, and in urgent necessity only one of the senses may be anointed. The form of the sacrament are the words spoken by the priest: “Through this holy anointing and His most pious mercy, may the Lord forgive thee whatever faults thou hast committed through sight (hearing, etc…). Amen.” It would appear, though, that any prayer for the spiritual welfare of the person would suffice. The other prayers before and after the anointing are obligatory, but not needed for validity. The ordinary minister of the sacrament is a priest or the bishop. Any priest may confer it, but lawfully it belongs to pastor of the place where the sick person is. Those are my notes from a book I read a few months ago...the actual passage is James 5:14 ff
phatcatholic Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006 here's the passage from James: James 5:14-15 14 Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; 15 and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven. also, see this from Mark's gospel: Mark 6:12-13 12 So they went out and preached that men should repent 13 And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many that were sick and healed them.
