Ash Wednesday Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006 Good lord. The New York Times is giving the radtrad set more ballyhoo to go with.
Colleen Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006
Christian Weisner, spokesman for the German chapter of the liberal Catholic group We Are Church, called the encyclical "a sign of hope" that Benedict would prove to be a "human face for Christianity and for the Catholic Church." He said, however, that he hoped that the pope's emphasis on love would make him more open to opposing views. "Loving your neighbors also means loving critical theologians, he said. "He also has to apply these ideas within the church itself."
Clearly Mr. Weisner needs to go back and re-read the encyclical. That and somebody needs to explain to him what love really means. Loving someone does not imply acceptance of a person's wrongdoing. If the Church didn't love these theologians as children of God, She wouldn't correct them and try to bring them back to Christ.
Guest Rick777 Posted January 27, 2006 Posted January 27, 2006
that crooked figure of Christ has been reported as having satanic origins. in all reality, that crosier is just an ugly cross on a stick. they should return to the traditional vestments and papal ornaments.
Brendan, I'm very dissapointed with your statement here.
phatcatholic Posted January 28, 2006 Posted January 28, 2006
that crooked figure of Christ has been reported as having satanic origins. in all reality, that crosier is just an ugly cross on a stick. they should return to the traditional vestments and papal ornaments.
personally, i didn't take brendan as meaning here that the cross the pope uses is satanic. he said "has been reported" which does not necessarily mean that it is his personal opinion, and he followed it with "in all reality" which works to counter whatever comes before it. so, if anyone should take offense, it should be in him saying that this crozier is "an ugly cross on a stick." as for the supposed ugliness of the pope's cross, i assert that it is actually a more realistic portrayal and that it is our modern sensibilities that have turned the cross into two clean and perfectly-square 2by4's intersecting at perfect 90 degree angles (unless they happen to have that sort of thing just lyin around). surely you would shun all things modern, brendan
Ash Wednesday Posted January 28, 2006 Posted January 28, 2006
Benedict would prove to be a "human face for Christianity and for the Catholic Church."
Well, Benedict isn't a cyborg!
Akalyte Posted January 28, 2006 Posted January 28, 2006
What a bunch of spin. What these people fail to realize is that by preaching love, Pope Benedict is implicitly rejecting and opposing abortion, contraception, homosexual activity, and all the other things that "divide Catholics." I think they completely fail to grasp what the faith of the Church is. The Church, in pursuing true orthodoxy, is always charitable.
exactly. that article really ticked me off..
Desert Walker Posted January 30, 2006 Posted January 30, 2006 Why do people bother writing stuff like this? Doesn't ANYBODY just realize the simple truth that Caotholicism (doctrines, hard sayings, practices and all) is actually TRYING VERY HARD to put an end to all injustice in this world? I think the trouble is that people who write stuff like this are so complicated in the head that they are unable to realize the incredibly SIMPLE fact that ALLL SIN is unjust! Sin is the daggon problem! Rules and doctrines ATTACK sin at the root. The root of sin is PRIDE. When you decide to follow rules that are actually HARD to follow, that actually require some self-sacrifice, pride has a hard time stickin around.
Desert Walker Posted January 30, 2006 Posted January 30, 2006 Oh yeah, one more thing. The root of sin is NOT low self-esteem. The root of low self-esteem is very often, if not solely, sin itself.
