Wow, what a blessing Phatmass is. You've received great advice from everybody.

What else can I tell you about the sisters? Not much! I know enough to tell you that if you decide God wants you to join them and you answer His call that you will live a full life. Full of joy, full of prayer, full of service, and full of work.

You're taking a leap here. I pray that God will give you a soft landing.
Don't over analyse things! (you know you have a tendancy to do that, don't you?) :)

That was me, not Kristina. Sorry

[quote name='daugher-of-Mary' date='Feb 7 2006, 07:12 PM']They are such a lovely, holy bunch of Sisters! A dear friend of mine belongs to that community...please say "hi" to Sr. Mary Faustina from Elizabeth in PA for me!

I agree with jgirl...don't go with the intention of discerning that community in particular. Go with the intention of giving your heart and future more completely to God. There will be plenty of time to spend just with Him, so make good use of it! Let Him love you, and love Him, and leave the rest in His hands.

[quote name='jgirl' date='Feb 7 2006, 07:29 PM']For the comfortable shoes, bring sneakers. They have gravel, and you'll probably go on at least one Rosary walk. Definitely don't bring the boots! I wore lace patterned tights when I got off the plane for my first visit, and even though they only saw them for a few minutes because I got in at 2 am, rumor has it that I wore fishnets (which they could have been confused for easily in the dark). I usually bring nice shirts and nice jeans or pants because that's how I usually dress. I probably wouldn't go with Care Bears, though (I do say that as one who has a change purse that's the shape of Hello Kitty's head).

Be yourself, but take a step back and see what flies. Don't be scared. They are all very easy to talk to!

thanks, but i dont have sneakers!!! i haent worn them since i graduated. i wear boots, heels, slippers, and flip flops. the boots are the only thing that goes well with my jeans and a few skirts!!! i could see why the sisters thought that...i hate fishnet...but they can be comfortable at times...ie hot summer/spring days.....with work i dress in black pants or skirts with the boots, and a 2 piece top (a tank top and shrug). i dont have a care bear purse but i dont have shirts with care bears on them...i alkwys bring my care bear that was given to me for confirmation...it helps me for some reason...and i also bring a fleece blanket that has care bears on it as well. i bring those for personal reasons. i took the care bear on a visit once and one of the novices grabbed the bear and started playing with it and started singing a song from the tv show...i was laughing so hard!!! But i can see what you mean. i'm still scared...thanks jen!!!

Don't worry! The Sisters will probably let you borrow a pair. When I visited, I didn't bring any working shoes, but the Sisters lent me some really ugly, really comfortable, black lace-ups. I heart ugly shoes, so I was pleased as punch :)

It definitely won't be too cold in the middle of March. I went down last year at that time, and it was gorgeous. Illinois winters are nothing like Alabama winters. It can get cold, but their January is like Illinois' October or November. Their March is like our late April or early May.

They do all kinds of manual labor. They have done a lot of the interior work on their convent addition that's in progress. You have to be ready to get your hands (and feet dirty!)

You can also go to Payless, Target, or Walmart and get a cheap pair of sneaks.

First of all:
Sixtina, I am so happy for you. I hope this trip brings you closer to God and helps in your discernment. I'm praying for you. :bigpray:
Secondly:
Could some one explain how Sister Servants were founded. Someone in my parish keeps on saying they left the Nashville Dominicans because the Nashville Dominicans wanted to get rid of the habit and the Sister Servants are an "ultra conservative" off shoot. Now, I know that this is not true, but I didn't know what to say b/c I don't know much about them. This has come up twice now in conversation so for the next encounter maybe I can offer some illumination.
Peace and Blessings,
Amanda

Coolness. I'm excited for you sixtina87!

When Mother Mary Gabriel was still a Nashville Dominican, she was sent by her superior to work with Mother Angelica. Through that contact, I assume she felt God calling her to found the Sister Servants, who have a Dominican/Franciscan charism. They are not Dominican, however, so I think calling them an "off-branch" of Nashville would be misleading. The Nashville Dominicans themselves are a solid, orthodox order, reaping tens of vocations--I seriously doubt they were considering ditching the habit, although I have no inside information.

"She felt God calling her" is a good, true answer that avoids all gossipy, political nitpicking that we can fall into so easily.
