crazymaine catholic
Front page of the Boston Herald this morning says the Sox are making a pitch to bring Roger Clemens home. That would be AMAZING.
are they still going for clemens? honestly, i don't think that would be the greatest idea. he's getting up there in age, which hasn't seemed to be much of a deterent, i mean, it is clemens, but the sox have 7 starting pitchers already. where on earth would the sox put him? Era Might
are they still going for clemens? honestly, i don't think that would be the greatest idea. he's getting up there in age, which hasn't seemed to be much of a deterent, i mean, it is clemens, but the sox have 7 starting pitchers already. where on earth would the sox put him?
You can never have too much starting pitching. It always evens itself out in the season, whether through injury, underperformance, or whatever. Imagine facing Beckett, Schilling, and Clemens back-to-back-to-back in a playoff series. Add Wakefield to the mix, who's usually a solid performer, particularly in the postseason, and your number 5 starter could be either Arroyo or Clement (assuming he's not traded). Arroyo can always go help out in the bullpen, too. And if Papelbon progresses this year like we expect him to, you never know. If Foulke can get back to his old self, a Timlin-Papelbon-Foulke bullpen can be dangerous. I think the Red Sox can potentally have as good a pitching corps as Chicago this year, if things work out. And we've definitely improved our defense. Lowell and Gonzalez on the left side of the infield are excellent, and JT Snow over at first backing up Youkilis. Pitching and defense wins championships. We won't score as much this year, but pitching and defense will fill the gap. Edited February 8, 2006 by Era Might

You forget that the Sox won the World Series just two years ago.
And then the Red Sox had a horrible offseason. I think the Red Sox only have like 3 or 4 players that were even on the World Series team at this point. The White Sox have only become a better team in the offseason. They have added Jim Thome who will provide tons offense and completes the bats of Konerko and Dye. They only made their pitching staff stronger with Javier Vazquez. The White Sox have by far the best pitching staff from their starters to their bullpen They proved it in the regular and postseason. They were the first team to have four pitchers throw back to back to back to back complete games in the playoffs. David Wells is only getting older and you don't know what to expect from Schilling after last year. Clement tends to fall apart the 2nd half of the season and Beckett is injury prone. The AL East will be a close race, I expect the Blue Jays to be a lot better than most people expect.
crazymaine catholic
i know that starting pitching is always good, but how much is too much? i mean, it would be pretty bad if they can't get all the pitchers to pitch. it would be a waste of talent. and just because wells and schilling and even the rocket, no matter where he ends up, are getting old, that doesn't mean they don't have skill. you need to remember that schilling was coming off of a rough off season with surgery, as was keith foulke. i'm convinced that if the older guys are healthy, they are as potent and dangerous as any other pitcher on the staff. david wells was fantastic in the second half of the season, as was tim wakefield. in fact, the last knuckle ball pitcher the sox had, the older he got, the better he got. i don't think anyone can write off any member of the sox rotation this year. there is depth in the rotation and the bullpen. yeah, i agree with you era might. get clemens. who knows when we'll need him. Tony
It's all about the A's!
A's definatly have a shot at winning the World Series. What are you guys doing to do with your pitching staff, you have like 6 starters. Are they still thinking about trading Zito?

Schilling Kapler Ramirez Ortiz Wakefield Nixon Varitek Arroyo Foulke Timlin That's 10 remaining members of the World Series club that come to mind, all starters or regular bullpen guys except Kapler. There hasn't been much to go on the past few offseasons. The Red Sox got what they could last year (Clement), and they did the same this year (Beckett). Beckett has a chance to be a primo number 1 starter for years to come, taking the mantle from Clemens, Pedro, and Schilling. But the most exciting factor going forward is our young nucleus. Jonathon Papelbon (He was electric last year. His fast ball is unhittable. He'll be a star in the future, at the very least a number 2, if not a number 1. This year he'll probably be a long reliever, unless he progresses at rapid speed.) Dustin Pedroia (infielder; also excellent potential) Craig Hansen (was highly scouted. May have gone #1 in the draft if people weren't so afraid of Scott Boras as his agent) Kevin Youkilis (starting first baseman this year; was praised by A's GM Billy Beane as an excellent money ball player) Add to this the young corps of Alex Gonzalez, Coco Crisp, Bronson Arroyo, and David Ortiz, the Sox have a good future coming up. Those great Yankees clubs of the late '90s were built on home grown and young talent (Jeter, Williams, Rivera, etc). crazymaine catholic
craig hansen is certainly fantastic. actually, he was playing up here in portland for a while with the sea dogs. i was incredibly impressed with his performance last season, despite his limited opportunities. jonathan papelbon is beyond words. that guy is AMAZING!!!! i loved watching him pitch. i can't wait to see him pitch some more. if he can avoid high pitch counts, he can go whole games firing hard fastballs. this season can't start soon enough... : : we need a baseball smiley : or is there? nope. khouse
To be honest, I have an equal distaste for the Red Sox as I do the Yankees. The whole rivalry between the two is so overhyped by ESPN and shoved down the throats of the rest of the nation and we are expected to care. After the White Sox SWEPT the Red Sox in the playoffs this year Chris Berman decided to eulogize the Red Sox talk about how great it has been for everyone in New England this past year and what a dream it has been for all the fans, blah blah blah... rather than focus on the fact the WHITE SOX HAD JUST SWEPT THE RED SOX. I actually think I may dislike the Red Sox more than the Yankees for the sheer fact that the Yankees at least own up to being an evil empire while Red Sox have had the 2nd highest payroll in all of baseball but still somehow got played as the underdog all the time. Maybe its because like the fanbase of the Cubs the Red Sox somehow turned their many years of loosing into something loveable. All you heard from the media before the Red Sox won the World Series was how much their fanbase has suffered. Well, the White Sox had suffered longer but their fans never made it a big pit party about their losing ways. I have meet some really great Boston fans though and I do know it is a town that loves baseball but I am also disgusted in the overkill of their coverage by ESPN and grown to just clump them together with the Yankees as a team I cringe at. Last year the White Sox proved they were the best team in baseball by going wire to wire with the best record in the American League and then going 11-1 in the playoffs and they have only improved this offseason. The Red Sox can be a good team with a lot 'ifs'. IF Schilling can rebound, if Beckett stays healthy, if Wells knees are ok, if Clement doesn't have another bad second half, if Foulke can come back and be dominant again, if Manny isn't a pre-madonna (oh no wait you can't avoid that : ) and they will have three other good teams to battle with in the AL East. I am pulling for the Blue Jays, they have some good young players and good pitching. But no one really knows but thats why you play the game. Era Might
Here's a clue: nobody cares about the White Sox. That's why nobody watched the World Series. I'm glad that the White Sox won the World Series. Good for them, and good for the people of Chicago. But nobody cares. People care about the Red Sox. People care about the Yankees. Just like people care about Notre Dame, or the Los Angeles Lakers. The sooner you accept that fact of life, the better it'll be for the rest of us. : Nothing is greater in Sports than Yankees-Red Sox. It's impossible for it to be overhyped. crazymaine catholic
looks like another rivalry is brewing. a rivalry of sox. too bad there isn't a major league team called the blue sox. then we could have games with the red white and blue sox. :
