Hey PM phamily!
I'm new to the phorums.... but I've been reading them for awhile now!! Anyway, I've been discerning for a long time, and I was just wondering what books you all might recommend for someone who is discerning/hoping to grow in holiness. Thanks!
God Bless!

Hi,

My favorite vocation book was Come and Follow Me by Father Stefano Manelli, FI. If you'd like to buy it, here is the complete web address for the book:

http://marymediatrix.com/Merchant2/merchan...ategory_Code=SM

It was also suggested by Sister Mary Fidelis of the PCPA nuns in Phoenix, that I read the book Christian Totality: Theology of the Consecrated Life by Revs. Basil Cole and P Conner. That website is:

http://www.religiouslife.com/catalog/detai...id_catalog=b173

Growing in holiness? Of course, scripture, spiritual reading, lives of the saints, anything that is authentic Catholic reading, such as the books that TAN books publishes. See http://tanbooks.com/

May our Lord bless you as you grow close to Him.

Parker Palmer's book Let Your Life Speak is a great compliment to any other spiritual/discernment book you may be reading. It has really helped me understand (from a Christian anthopology perspective) how I am personally going about discerning my own (religious) vocation.

And, :welcome:!!!!!!!

I'm sorry, but are you a fan of TAN?

I definatly am :ninja:

Also, if you haven't already, Imitation of Christ is a great one to read... I'm still reading it now and it is very good...

Also, another note about TAN, they have a new book called Religious Vocation: An Unessecary Mystery that looks very interesting... They have way too many books and I want to read them all!

I am a SUPER fan of TAN! :shield: . I just purchased about 8 books including the Religious Vocation book. I also bought Imitation of christ, because my old one was small (pocket size) and old. I also bought the St Gertrude book.

Long Live TAN!

Story of a Soul (Therese's Autobiography) is great for anyone wanting to grow in holiness.
A great book for someone discerning a call to the Priesthood is A Priest Forever by Father Benedict Groeschel
I got to go to Evening Prayer here at the sem or I would list many more, maybe I will add to the list later
God Bless

Oh, can I steal part of your signature and add it to my own? I love it!

This one: Truth is not determined by majority vote - His Holiness Benedict XVI

I read his views on relativism, but I'd never heard him say that. don't you just LOVE him? Our Lord sure knew what He was doing when He picked our current Papa. . .but then, He always does! ;)

I haven't read it but Sr. Lauren always recommended A Right to be Merry by Mother Mary Francis

OH such wonderful suggestions and i just LOVE reading, so I am looking forward to reading some of these books.

I found "The Imitation of Christ" and also "the Sinners Guide" to be very helpful, St. Teresa of Avilas "way of perfection" and for those discerning calls to the Poor Clares (or cloistered contemplative) I found "A Right to Be Merry" by Mother Mary Francis to be very helpful and inspiring and Mother Mary Francis has a great style of writing, very humerous! Also any books on the lives of the saints.

also, I'm a TAN fan too, I LOVE it!

Grace and Freedom: Operative Grace in the Thought of St. Thomas Aquinas by Bernard Lonergan.

Kidding.

I would suggest A Pilgrim's Journey: The Autobiography of Ignatius of Loyola (Introduction, translation and commentary by Joseph N. Tylenda, S.J.).

Hey I'm reading "The Cloud of Unknowning" which is a book written to a man about to enter into the contemplative life. It is relative to everyone though.

And if you are a fan of St. John of the Cross, this book was his inspiration.

WHOA!!!!

I read the Magnificat each day and every so often one of the meditations for the day is from "The Cloud of Unknowning." Each time I read them I think "I should look for that book." I find the paragraphs really good.

Today at work I was going through a pile of books and came across the book!!! I thought "how cool!" So I took it. And now you write this!! I can't wait to read it. It looks really good.

And I  St. John of the Cross!! I didn't know He used this book!!

I heartily recommend "And You Are Christ's" by Fr. DuBay. It's a tiny and easy to read book, but it is packed with some of the most beautiful and thought-provoking insights into the religious life (particularly for us young women).

If you want, you can always borrow it from me when you get back home.

:D: Oh man... I get a catalouge from them and I made a list of nearly 40 books I would like, many of them being 200+ pages... I already have a good number of their books and when I order from them, I have to pay state taxes because I live in Illinois in the Rockford Diocese, but an hour away from Rockford... that makes me sad because then I have to pay more. One day I just want to drive up to their warehouse or whatever and just ask if I can buy the books there...
Sorry for the rant... :D:
