but the fundamental difference between all numbers, then, is where the string of infinities begins. imagine it is like going down an infinite stretch of road, both have the same distance and are traveling the same distance, but one begins further away. that one will always be further away. 9.999.... is always 1 9 behind .999....

this solves the problem. you just have to change your perspective and look at the infinity as an infinitely progressing stream of numbers, if both streams are infinity one of them can still be behind the other in its progression into infinity.
