Artistic Orders?

I know there are cloistered orders, and others that specialize in teaching and medicine. But are there any orders that would allow you to be an artist? The only ones I could think of might be EWTN since they might need graphic artists. (???) Or are there any orders of nuns that are involved in publishing?

Thanks everybody :D:

If you explore some past threads in Vocation Station you can read about the Daughters of St. Paul whose apostolate is all about evangelization through the media, publishing included. Art work may be employed by some monastic and cloistered orders as a means of self support; you would have to contact them or read their webpages to find out more. I seem to recall that some nuns do iconography that is sold through catalogs ( for example, the Benedictines of Conception Abbey in Missouri who have a printery house). Sorry I can't be more helpful here.

ALL monasteries can use artistic talent, for everything from posters for jubilees and novenas--to actually too many things to enumerate here.

That would be pretty cool to have a religious order devoted specifically to the production and preservation of art.

In terms of publishing, the Dominican Nuns at Summit NJ do a good bit of it. Sr. Mary Catherine wrote and got published her book Amata Means Beloved and Sr. Judith Miryam compiled a new edition of To Heaven With Diana. They used to have printing presses and stuff, but now most of their work is digital and desktop publishing.

The Daughters of St. Paul are big into publishing because their apostolate is getting the Gospel message out through the media. The publish books, magazines, pamphlets and all sorts of stuff. They are active sisters and are present all over the world.

In terms of art, like Gemma said, many orders use artistic sisters to make items to benefit the monastery. Caligraphy, stained glass, candle-making, painting, ceramics....these are just some talents that I know of that can be done in a monastery.

One artist nun you might look at is Sr. Mary Grace, a Dominican nun who does great work!

Here is her site---------Sr. Mary Grace

I think someone on the "Shrine of Holy Whapping" blog mentioned something about someone coming up with an order for religious art preservation and production.

I know one aspiring founder was proposing a men's order that would include church architecture in their charism. They're listed on our "New Communities Consortium" page of our SOLC website.

This "artistic order" idea keeps popping up. I shall have to discern. Something might be trying to come through.

BTW--who is the patron saint of artists? St. Luke?

Blessings,
Gemma

St. Luke is listed as a patron of artists along with St. Catherine of Bologna
and Bl. (Fra) Angelico :saint: .

I would also be interested in those sort of Orders for priests...

...then check out St. John's Abbey in Collegeville, Minnesota
aka

www.stjohnsabbey.org

They, like many Benedictine orders, are interested in art in a serious way.

Their quarterly, the Abbey Banner, available online (tho' a big file, bec. of its many pix, many of them of items in their collections) ...features articles and pix of their many religious images, icons, crucifixies, chalices, chasubles, and various collections.

Go to their website, and find the search engine. Enter "art" and find 40 refs. to their members who are artists and the abbey's numerous art exhibits. They also have a collection of priceless manuscripts.

They would be very interested in an artist-priest!!

The Benedictines of St. Hildegard's in Ruedesheim in Germany also support themselves through art: take a look here.

They were also featured on German tv in May of this year. You can have a look here. It's in German, but I think even if you don't understand the language (I can, just about enough to understand what they're saying) it's cool to look at.

Love and prayers,

PP

Check out the Franciscan Brothers of Peace. They painted a BEAUTIFUL Icon for our Chapel. On this page you can see one of the brothers at work: http://www.brothersofpeace.org/vocations.html

Pace Christi!

(Of course, they are fully habited, totally faithful to the Pope and the Magisterium, and all-around champions of authentic religious life!)

Both Dominicans and Franciscans were preaching orders, were they not?

In Poverty and Joy, bring out the Truth of the Gospel through art? Habit for the women--OP colors, but modeled after that of St. Catherine of Bologna? "Lord, let all who see my artwork see YOU."

Blessings,
Gemma

Just adding to what I said above:

Name: Religious Artisans of St. Luke

Charism: Franciscan and Dominican

Habit: Women--like St. Catherine of Bologna's, only white with black veil, Franciscan cord
Men--white tunic, black cowl, Franciscan cord
Both would wear medallion of St. Luke's painting of Our Lady

Rosary: not sure just what they'd have as of yet. Probably alternate Dominican rosary with Franciscan Crown of the 7 Joys. Carry both in pouches in pocket.

Just a thought.

Blessings,
Gemma
