Richard Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 Hi there, I was wondering what version of the bible you guys read? The only one I've got is the King James Version which I enjoy reading, but I understand is not particularly accepted by the Catholic faith. Does it matter what version you read? Am I missing the point? Any advice greatly appreciated... (I'm pretty new to this ) Cheers and God bless Richard
BLAZEr Posted January 7, 2004 Posted January 7, 2004 If you like the King James, and want a bible that contains all the books, then you might try the Knox Bible which you can probably find in a Catholic Bookstore in England. (your'e from the UK right?) Also, the RSV Catholic edition (not the NRSV) is a good version. The NRSV is changed for "inclusive" gender language. The RSV Catholic Edition is a good version, but not as poetic as the King James.
Richard Posted January 7, 2004 Author Posted January 7, 2004 Cheers Blazer, I'll try and get a copy of either. Yeah, I'm in the UK and there's at least one Catholic book store in my town. Right opposite to a huge mosque - keeping the faith!!! Some of the books were taken out of the "protestant" versions of the bible, right? What's that all about? Richard
~runnergurl~ Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 Hey Richard! I have a New American Bible. But surely it would be appropriate for any nationality My first and only, but it works fine for me. It's also got an encyclopedia type thing in the back which says this about the differences in Protestant and Catholic Bibles: Apocryphal (meaning hidden, I think) books are scripture-llike books spuriously claimed to be inspired and not entitled to a place in the Canon of Scripture. For the most part, these books attempt to fill in historical vacancies of the accepted writings, but many of them are definitely heretical. Since their authenticity is either doubtful or obviously false, the Catholic Church has rejected these writings which are not included in the Catholic Bible. A few of the books classified unacceptable are III and IV Ezra, III and IV Maccabees, Prayer of Manasses, and the Gospel of James. The Protestant Apocrypha differs from that of the Catholic Church. They erroneously refuse to accept Tobit, Judith, Sirach (an amesome one, might I add,) Baruch, I and II Maccabees, and parts of Esther and Daniel; all of which are part of the Catholic Bible. Annnyways, hope you find a good one. May the pages be torn and the cover be ratty very soon! haha... God bless, Janet
Circle_Master Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 decent response runnergirl - and without bias. good job I would suggest the ESV if you like the beauty of the KJV and want modern language. It has been getting amesome reviews by many theologians. Unfortunately for you it is only the protestant canon however.
Richard Posted January 8, 2004 Author Posted January 8, 2004 Cheers all for you kind responses. A little light shed on a mysterious subject I think! God Bless Richard :)
cmotherofpirl Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 Go get a copy of the New English bible, which is approved for Catholics in the UK. It contains the poetry of Shakespearean english and the correctness of the RSV_CE. The translations of the psalms are particularly lovely.
Norseman82 Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 I was raised on the 1970 version of the New American Bible, so obviously I'm partial to what I'm used to. But if you like the KJV, might I suggest the Douay-Rheims, which is contemporary to the KJV but is Catholic? It has similar style (and throughout much of it, if you put it side-by-side, is almost word-for-word). If you want to compare parallel translations, go to www.awmach.org and choose the translations in parallel option and choose the KJV and Douay-Rheims to compare/contrast.
Ellenita Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 Hi Richard - great to have another person from the UK here! Whereabouts are you? I live in London. Like you, I have been trying to find a catholic bible to read but there's not many available in ordinary bookshops, I can tell you. The New English Bible has a revised version out with gender free language (on sale in all the bookshops I checked) and as far as I can see from reading the inside cover, this particular translation has not been approved by the catholic church, so don't muddle it with the NEB! I love the language of the New International Version and am finding it difficult to abandon it, however, I also have a Jerusalem bible and am using both side by side at the moment. I don't know if I qualify as an oldie here at Phatmass yet (I most certainly do in terms of my age!! ), but I'd just like to say welcome aboard to you! :D
cmotherofpirl Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 Ellenita find the old version, not the new one. THe old version was approved and states so in the permissions. I brought my copy back from England many years ago.
Richard Posted January 8, 2004 Author Posted January 8, 2004 Hi and thanks once again for all the responses. Based on your good advice, I whipped out the credit card and ordered a copy of the RSV through Waterstones on Amazon. Can’t wait for it to arrive now! I like the language in the KJV, but it’s a little hard to interpret at times. Makes for interesting reading though. Hi Ellenita, it’s nice to hear from you. I live in Coventry – come on the Brits :D !!! Thanks once again and God bless Richard

Richard Posted January 8, 2004 Author Posted January 8, 2004 Oh bum! Two versions of the same version of the bible, how confusing is that?!?!? Well I'll find out when it arrives if I've been lucky or a credit card-happy fool! If it's not the Catholic version, it can always go on Ebay! :D
MrsFrozen Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 Oh bum! Two versions of the same version of the bible, how confusing is that?!?!? I think you can cancel your order with Amazon.com until you make sure. I THINK.. I have the NAB. I like that it's in the language I use. God bless! :)
mp15 Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Ignatius Bible. A very good version in my opinion. Here is a little info. http://shop.catholic.com/cgi-local/SoftCar....html?E+scstore
Richard Posted January 8, 2004 Author Posted January 8, 2004 The one I rdered is the RSV reference edition Bible (published by Cambridge University Press - ISBN: 0521513073) Can someone shed any light on whether this one is any good or not? I'll cancel the order and get another if it's not! :)
Ellenita Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 Cmom, thanks! Yes I've been looking for the old version. I was just amazed that I was sensible enough to check the inside of the revised version - you would think it would be OK given that it's the 'same translation', but I couldn't see the catholic church as being listed so I assume the revised edition is not approved. Of course this means that I've got to visit the bookshop at Westminster Cathedral.... ......just waiting til my finances have recovered from Christmas 'cos I know I won't be able to stop at one book!!! :D I'm amazed at how different the NIV and the Jerusalem versions are though - the 'interpretation' of some identical verses could be completely different because of the way the English is structured.
BLAZEr Posted January 8, 2004 Posted January 8, 2004 Richard, I am not sure if the RSV that you have is the Catholic Edition or not . . . do you? The Ignatius Bible is the RSV Catholic edition. I am not sure of the one that you ordered, I can't find it.
Richard Posted January 8, 2004 Author Posted January 8, 2004 I'll just wait and see when it arrives, I think. Even if it's not the Catholic version, it should be interesting reading. Thanks for all the advice! :D
