These hermits are 15 minutes from my home -and I had NO idea they were there! I love their monastery, habits, and apostolate of iconography!

OUR CALLING

The Hermits of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel were founded in 1987 as an eremitical community of Carmelites within the ancient Order of Carmel. We lead a semi-eremitical, semi-communal form of life, based upon the Carmelite Rule and the spiritual teaching of the saints of Carmel.
In a world where the human form is frequently disfigured and exploited, the icon brings us back to the profound mystery of the human person made in the image and likeness of God, and a deeper reverence for that same God who willed to take on human flesh for love of us. Many hours of meticulous design preparation and painting are necessary in the creation of each icon in an effort to portray more deeply the sacredness of each subject.

As Michel Quenot writes in his book, The Icon: "Before drawing the icon...the monk engenders it within his heart in silence, by prayer and asceticism. With purified heart and eyes, he can then draw the image of a transfigured world."

More than an art form, icons beckon us to a spiritual encounter as their characteristic two-dimensional aspect draws us into a unique and immediate intimacy with the sacred subjects portrayed. It is our hope that by contemplating these holy images you will grow ever closer to the beauty that can be found only in God and His heavenly Kingdom.
I like their statement on Icons. Divine description if you ask me.

Some might be postulants- wearing an abbreviated habit?

Anyway I've discerned with Lake Elmo- their prior, Fr. John Mary of the Cross is a holy amazing Carmelite father. They preach retreats to my local Discalced Carmelite Nuns. I recommend them very much.

Their novice-master and another former member founded the Carmelite Monks

Veritas- one of the priests (Fr John or Joseph Mary) offers Mass daily for the Nuns down the road. If you see Fr John Mary, the prior- short, with a beard tell him Brendan from Buffalo said hello!

First year novices vs second year?

There is a Carmel I visited, where the sisters don't receive the black veil until they make solemn vows. So perhaps some are novices and some are in vows.

Just found this thread from last year. :j There's something on the Lake Elmo OCD Carmel's foundress here - also, they're here - http://picasaweb.google.com/ocdnuns the pages from the Carmel in the US book - It was Padre Pio who chose their name, the Carmel of Our Lady of Divine Providence.

In all OCD Carmels I believe, the black veil is not given until Solemn Profession.

I don't think that's so with the Carmelite OCD Sisters in Alhambra. But then again, I'm not too good with the stages and terms.

I think they receive the black veil before Solemn Profession, and their ring at their Solemn Profession.
