Jaime
I went to those mass too, and I think he should have done something about it. There were people standing by the priest who was giving out communion as a means of protection or I dont know, but nothing really happened to stop them. I think it would be very easy to explain why they couldnt recieve communion. I dont understand where the conflict was that he must have come across. They are in public display or their sins, so we can withold communion. Is it so hard to come out and tell them that and attempt to enforce it?
And the Archbishop has. In the years that sashwearers received, The Archbishop was allowing it because of his interpretation of Canon law. He has since been counseled by Cardinal Arinze on the best way to handle the situation and has ordered the priests of our Diocese not to give out communion to those wearing sashes. Would you like to take back your comment about him being afraid now?

thessalonian
Holy cow is that a gross misrepresentation of what went down at the Cathedral. I've been there for those masses and so has Thess. And while he and I have had our discussions about how Archbishop Flynn handled it, I'm pretty sure that he and I are the same page on the fact that Archbishop Flynn did not act out of fear or cowardess. You might consider rethinking your story Crosscut.
Affirmative. While I did not agree with the way he was handling it, I understood why he was handling it the way he was. AB Flynn is not a coward. I've written back and forth letters with him. He is very responsive for an Archbishop. His belief is that he can teach sin and error out of people. I agree to a point. His point is beyond my point and apparently the Vatican's as well and so now they don't allow the sashers communion any more. He was not afraid of the day that he had to start denying it. This is a good archbishop. A little too pastoral(IMHO or pehaps IMNSHO) but orthodox in my experience. CrossCuT
Another thing I dont like, and prlly dont understand, is the Eros Caritas Est controversy. The Bishop wanted to use it in our catholic schools, but a priest had spoke up against it and was consequently prohibited from talking on Relevant Radio and having his homilies online etc. What was that about? homeschoolmom
Listen-- this is not a thread where we are going to bash the good Archbishop. Period. We have had this debate and if you want to read about what was said, go look in the debate table.
CrossCuT
I didnt know I was bashing. And I didnt know there was already a thread about this in the debate table.
homeschoolmom
The topic of this thread is looking for GOOD in our archdiocese, not criticising decisions you don't like.

thessalonian
When your speaking against a bishop or Archbishop it is good to stay indoors on cloudy days. I am aware of the situation you speak. I know the priest, who is being submissive to his Archbishop. Admirable indeed. I don't have all the behind the scenes details but the action the AB took was within his authority. Personally I leave it at that.

Veritas
hey now, add St Augustine's in South St Paul to the list of good ones. We even still have a Latin mass every sunday! (I'm away at school now in fargo moorhead but good ol' St A's is still home!)
+ It's on there! You didn't look at the updated list! Good call though.
I would have to say one of the BEST orthodox churches in Minnesota has to be St. Agnes, St. Paul. They have an ALL latin high mass that is beautiful especially when you get the orchestra in there! The Cathedral isnt even as good. They have allowed Rainbow Sashed gays and gay supporters to recieve Holy Communion. Every year on a spacific day the Catholic Gays and Gay supporters all come to mass wearing rainbow sashes to show their support and attempt to recieve Holy Communion that way. The bishop was told by many priests to not allow them too, but he was too afraid.
+ As a memeber of the Cathedral, who is on almost every committee I must tell you you are misinformed! The Cathedral is AWESOME!!!!! The last two rectors, Fr. Skluzacek and now Fr. Joseph Johnson, HEARTILY FORBID reception by public dissenters -"rainbow sash". The reason for any other "reception" was the doing of Archbishop Flynn, which he has had to change because of a DIRECT call from Cardinal Arinze. They have NOT been allowed to receive for TWO years -THANK GOD! And, the Cathedral entirely supports Courage (on the website, in the cathedral literature racks, in the bulletins etc...). Also, Fr. Johnson and Fr. Erickson (the new associate), give POWERHOUSE talks on orthodoxy and fidelity to the pope and magisterium -You WILL NOT find two more orthodox priests.
