misereremi
Lovely post, everything so true.
I want my daughter to know that every day decisions will no longer be routine. That a five year old boy's desire to go to the men's room rather than the women's at McDonald's will become a major dilemma. That right there, in the midst of clattering trays and screaming children, issues of independence and gender identity will be weighed against the prospect that a child molester may be lurking in that restroom.
I'm in the "boy's toilet dilemma" with my 8 year old at the moment. I would never let him go to the men's alone before. Now he insists, so I stand outside the door. After 3 or so seconds I shout to him "I'm right outside the door, are you OK in there?!" I think I'll be doing this 'til he's a teen...

MissScripture
One time, I was with a family that I babysit for, because we had to go to the cities for one of the girls to go to a dr. appt. I was in charge of watching the two boys (8 and 6). They had to go to the bathroom and I figured that it was okay for them to go together. About 10 minutes later I start freaking out, because they still hadn't come out! I was standing by the door, looking panicked when a very nice gentleman came out and said, "Are you waiting for the two boys in there? They're fighting over washing their hands." A few seconds later, out they come, arguing. MAJOR SIGH OF RELIEF!!
homeschoolmom
I just always "help" my son open the door and say really loudly, "I'll just be waiting RIGHT HERE BY THE DOOR, Dear!"
IcePrincessKRS
One time I escorted my 8 year old brother to the rest room. While I waited outside the door he went about his buisness. All was fine and dandy until I heard a feeble wimper and cry for "Help!" As I made my move for the door he opened it and said "I can't turn the water off!" The sink was nearly over-flowing. MissScripture
I just always "help" my son open the door and say really loudly, "I'll just be waiting RIGHT HERE BY THE DOOR, Dear!"
Ooh, that's good. *scribbles down notes for future reference* Now, how about what to do when you have a baby in one arm and a three year old needs to wash her hands, but she can't reach the faucet without help. My best idea at that point was try REALLY hard not to squish either kid and hold both of them at the same time.
The Mater Dolorosa
I can remember the first time I let my son go check out a car show with a friend....I quietly followed after 5 mintues....could barely breath I was so anxious! Their first steps into anything new is very hard for moms!!
If its really tough I get a paper towel, wet it and soap it up and wash her hands that way! Sometimes if I hold her up she just tries to play in the water, which makes it even harder when you're holding 2 kids.
