LouisvilleFan Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 I just came across this post yesterday on the very purposefully titled "Roman Catholic Blog": Liturgical Abuses In The Diocese Of Orange Remember that this is the same Bishop Tod Brown who was quite particular about demanding that one parish within his diocese - St. Mary's by the Sea - follow his own new liturgical norm and remain standing during the Agnus Dei, even allowing the parish administrator to send letters inviting Catholics who continued to kneel to leave the parish and the Diocese of Orange, tell those who continued to kneel that doing so was a mortal sin, and dismiss them from all parish volunteer positions and parish organizations with which they were affiliated. That's just an excerpt from the post, but you get the idea. I didn't watch the video since the caption says enough (homily was given by a non-ordained individual). I just have to ask, assuming Bishop Tod Brown still holds his position, why hasn't he been replaced? Doesn't the Pope have that authority? If not, surely in communion with the Magesterium? I don't understand why this pattern of behavior is tolerated.
Guest Rick777 Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 I've come to the conclusion that praying the Rosary is one of the best things we can do when faced with such...unorthodoxy. One of the 15 Promises of the Rosary is... "The Rosary will be a very powerful armour against hell. It will destroy vice, deliver from sin, and dispel heresy."
Theologian in Training Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 While I certainly do not agree with what is going on there, I think, at times, they are being harsh and just trying to find stuff to pick on. For example, is it possible that the priest just genuinely forgot to say the Creed? No priest is perfect (I know) and sometimes we forget very important things that will not change the validity of the Mass. I mean it should not be something habitual, but, at the same time, it is possible to forget. I think a lot of these people are just so angry that any little thing will offend them, even those that are unintended, because they are at the end and just want a change. I can certainly understand that, however, I think they may have lost some of their ability to be objective in certain situations, as a result. Just my .02 anyway God Bless
Katholikos Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 Tolerance of abuses is one of the things that leaves the Church open for criticism and turns inquirers away.
Noel's angel Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 That's really sad Lord, please don't let this continue.

N/A Gone Posted January 17, 2007 Posted January 17, 2007 I watched the video, that is some weird stuff. Im a newbie, but I know thats wrong. I would have probably walked out. What exactly can we do?
LouisvilleFan Posted January 19, 2007 Author Posted January 19, 2007
I watched the video, that is some weird stuff. Im a newbie, but I know thats wrong. I would have probably walked out. What exactly can we do?
Of course, the first thing we should do and continue doing is pray, Eucharist Adoration, all that stuff. But my question, as a relative newbie to Catholicism, is more about why things like this continue when Catholic evangelists love spouting that line about authority in the Church. Well, where's the authority to stop a priest or bishop who is clearly and habitually out of line??? Isn't one clown Mass enough to get a stern warning? If I were his bishop and he did it again, he wouldn't be one of my priests anymore. Well, that's how I see it, but it's easy for anyone to say what they would do if they had the authority to do something. Are there reasons of which I'm ignorant (as a pretty new Catholic) for tolerating these things? I understand that in most cases, the pastoral thing to do isn't to lay the smack down and start defrocking priests right and left (or only left... j/k). It's just that some situations seem rather extreme and should call for stronger action than what I'm observing. Did anyone see that story about the bishop in Nigeria who is excommunicating Catholics if they don't register to vote? Whether you agree with him or not, at least he ain't neutered. Just as a caveat, the Church is not nearly as bad off as reading or seeing stuff like that makes it look. For one, we always have Christ in our midst spiritually and physically. I certainly think the Church is better off in it's current "weak" state because I know Christ always comes through when we are personally weak. He can do more with a priest shortage than we think is possible with a priest surplus.
