AlterDominicus Posted March 3, 2007 Posted March 3, 2007
Very, very nice... You have a lot of saints. We are just a baby Order, so we are working on it.
Truce??? Have a drink Sister: Cheers!
shortnun Posted March 6, 2007 Posted March 6, 2007 Sr. Colleen (or others), could you please explain your name as "Salesians" as you are part of the St. John Bosco family line and not St. Francis de Sales (as I originally thought). Thanks! (We're really glad to get a perspective on a new spirituality here on Phatmass.)

(We're really glad to get a perspective on a new spirituality here on Phatmass.)
*ahem* as a Salesian Cooperator (lay association of the faithful founded by St John Bosco - think "Third Order" but we were really the first put together .... haha) and future aspirant of the Salesian Sisters I would be happy to answer... St John Bosco took gave us the name "Salesian" after St Francis de Sales because he knew that our work with the young would be difficult at times and he wanted us to imitate the "zeal and gentle charity of SFdS". He wanted us to learn from his practical sense of spirituality, his meeknes, and kindness. He was a natural choice for Don Bosco, who was familiar with his writings, because he is the favorite saint of Don Bosco's part of Italy - the Piedmont region.
Are there other groups that are called ‘Salesians’ besides the ‘Salesians of Don Bosco’? Yes there are other groups that use the name ‘Salesian’. St. Francis de Sales, a Doctor of the Catholic Church, gave birth to a unique school of spirituality which is generally referred to as ‘Salesian Spirituality’. Other groups that live this spirituality as their own also refer to themselves as Salesians. The title ‘Salesians of Don Bosco’ aims to clarify that its members live the spirituality of St. Francis de Sales according to the style and charism of Don Bosco. LINK
Hence the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians also being known by the name of "Salesian Sisters of St John Bosco". Sr Colleen can probably add more.
shortnun Posted March 7, 2007 Posted March 7, 2007 So helpful! Thanks for the clarification. I have a friend who has been personally living a Jesuit-Salesian spirituality (she was taught by Jesuits and Visitation Sisters). And I wanted to know how "her Salesians" were different.

happynun Posted March 8, 2007 Author Posted March 8, 2007
Don't worry, Sister! I think Salesians are GREAT! I love Don Bosco and was adopted on his feast day! I even thought of becoming a FMA but the Lord called me to the cloister. I think I've read every book of every Salesian saint. Fr. Rinaldi was a friend of our community way back but I don't know the connection. Probably the Salesians WOULD win the basketball game! Great answer about the joke, too! God bless you, Sister! Sr. Mary Catharine
Thanks, Sr Mary Catherine! That is so awesome about Fr Rinaldi. I do not know if you know this, but Don Bosco said that once anyone has come into contact with the Salesians they automatically become part of the Salesian family (Don't tell AlterDominicus, but you are a SALESIAN because of that! haah!) That goes for anyone else I have met on here. We are kind of like pringles... once you pop you can't stop! LOL (I crack myself up... I really do!) We need prayers and the vocation of the cloistered sisters is so SO important! The active orders (like mine) could not exist without our contemplative sisters supporting us with their love and intercession. So thank you so much for that you do. Hear that AD? A Dominican said that WE would win. So there! : This is really such a fun thread.
