Question About Ashes

On Ash Wednesday, in the Gospel reading, Jesus said, don't be like the hypocrites, praying and fasting so as to be seen by everyone to be praying and fasting. Rather, He said, do it in secret.

Then we received ashes on our foreheads for everyone to see.

It seems like there's a bit of a disconnect there. Is it just me?

The ashes are not a sign that you are fasting. They don't make you look like you're dying of hunger or are delirious because of your lack of food. It's also not showing off because you are required to do it. It's a sign of fidelity to the Church.

Can you clarify your assertion of "fidelity to the Church"?
