Pio Nono
JMJ Old_Joe, As early as the French Council of Rouen (690, I think), the Church officially recognized marriage as a sacrament. Its sacramental nature was never seriously doubted by the Church. It was "officially" registered as one of the seven sacraments in the Council of Florence's Decree to the Armenians (1439). Hope this helps. Yours, Pio Nono
